Shearing In The Riverina
New South Wales.
by Rolf Boldrewood
[Thomas Alexander Browne]
"Shearing commences to-morrow!" These apparently simple words were spoken by Hugh Gordon, the manager of Anabanco station, in the district of Riverina, in the colony of New South Wales, one Monday morning in the month of August. The utterance had its importance to every member of a rather extensive "CORPS DRAMATIQUE" awaiting the industrial drama about to be performed. A low sand-hill a few years since had looked out over a sea of grey plains, covered partly with grass, partly with salsiferous bushes and herbs. Two or three huts built of the trunks of the pine and roofed with the bark of the box-tree, and a skeleton-looking cattle-yard with its high "gallows" (a rude timber stage whereon to hang slaughtered cattle) alone broke the monotony of the plain-ocean. A comparatively small herd of cattle, 2000 or 3000, found more than sufficient pasturage during the short winter and spring, but were always compelled to migrate to mountain pastures when the swamps, which alone in those days formed the water-stores of the run, were dried up. But two or three, or at most half-a-dozen, stockmen were ever needed for the purpose of managing the herd, so inadequate in number and profitable occupation to this vast tract of grazing country.

My name's Dick Marston, Sydney-side native. I'm twenty-nine years old, six feet in my stocking soles, and thirteen stone weight. Pretty strong and active with it, so they say. I don't want to blownot here, any roadbut it takes a good man to put me on my back, or stand up to me with the gloves, or the naked mauleys. I can ride anythinganything that ever was lapped in horsehideswim like a musk-duck, and track like a Myall blackfellow. Most things that a man can do I'm up to, and that's all about it.

A BIT ABOUT WORDS - Julian Burnside Bushrangers In the second edition of the Oxford English Dictionary, Rolf Boldrewood is quoted 184 times in illustration of about 160 words. Appropriately so. Boldrewood (Thomas Alexander Browne, 1826 – 1915) was the first Australian author to capture faithfully the emerging Australian variant of the English language. Although born in London, he came to Australia as a child and spent the rest of his life here. He ran a farm in Victoria and was later a police magistrate and a goldfields commissioner in the Victorian and NSW goldfields.. He had a good ear for idiom and had the courage to write it down faithfully. His characters are the first in Australian literature to speak real Australian, with no sense of parody. Boldrewood did for the Australian language what Tom Roberts did for the Australian landscape: he removed the European filter and saw Australia through Australian eyes. Boldrewood’s “Robbery Under Arms” is a comprehensive glossary of the language of bushrangers, and Dick Marston is the first truly Australian character in our literature. When Ned Kelly ambushed the police at Stringybark Creek he called “Bail up.

Miildenhall Collection; Pictorial Collection Penelope Layland reveals that the early history of the National Library is inextricably linked with that of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library T here is more to the relationship between the National Library of Australia and the Commonwealth Parliamentary Library than meets the eye, as is evident when one is firmly reminded that it was the Parliamentary Library which spawned the more famous National Library, not the other way around. Perhaps it would be fairer to say that it didn’t take long after the establishment of the Parliamentary Library, upon Federation in 1901, for the dual nature of the enterprise to become apparent. This was to be not only a library which would service the needs of the fledgling Federal Parliament but also, from the beginning, there was an awareness of the need to record and preserve the new nation’s documentary heritage as it was created. The word ‘parliamentary’ may have dominated the title in those early years (as the word ‘national’ was to dominate later), but this was always a two-headed idea, two institutions lumped for convenience under a single heading.
