Be forewarned: Man and money cannot remain together forever. Either the money is taken from the man, or the man is taken from the money. Money-worship, like idol worship, stems from a lack of trust in God. The more it is uprooted the more the world radiates with the blessing of the Holy One's love. sometimes against it. . .but we must sail, not drift or lie at anchor.

"Don't tell me where your priorities are. Show me where you spend your money and I'll tell you what they are." James W. Frick (1924- ) "But just as you excel in everything in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us see that you also excel in this grace of giving."

Volume 4, No. 1 Fall, 2003 From the President: I was very fortunate to be able to continue my work as a budding historian at the Roosevelt Study Center (RSC) a newly founded institute for American history in Middelburg, Zeeland. This institute started in 1986 to collect primary sources on twentieth-century America, Dutch-American relations, and the Roosevelts, making them available to European students of U.S. history. In the mid-1980s American Studies boomed in Europe and the need for these sources became evident. While working for the RSC, I simultaneously did my research for my Ph.D. at Leiden Frequent research trips to the United States have enabled me to attend a few AADAS conferences and present papers. I started to do research on the area where my Center is located, the province of Zeeland, and organized an exhibit to celebrate the sesquicentennial of the founding of Zeeland, Michigan, and made a number of good friends on the west side of the Atlantic Ocean. While a fair number of Dutch scholars have done research on immigration to the United States in the past (Pieter Stokvis, Rob Kroes, the late Henk van Stekelenburg, Annemieke Galema, Lucas Ligtenberg), most of them are no longer active in this field. (Continued on page 2 Advance Notice
My plans for AADAS entail four priorities. First, to strengthen the visibility of the organization by publishing the proceedings, thereby putting the results of our common effort in many more hands. During my stay at Hope College, I found at least ten articles in the past six AADAS volumes that greatly helped my own research (check my footnotes when my book is ready!). By the time you read this, the publication date of the 2003 proceedings is close by. Second, I hope we can broaden the scope of AADAS to include more colleges as conference hosts. I am delighted that Dordt College agreed to host the 2005 meeting. It would be great if we could also reach out to the Canadian institutes with Dutch roots. Third, it is necessary to catch and keep the

At the Battle-Fronts in the Great War JEFFERSON, MD (USA) What's more bizarre: a newborn piglet suckling a dog's milk, or a dogwho's never even had puppiesnursing a newborn piglet? Well, today we have both. The Frederick News-Post reports that "Dallas" the piglet one day decided to snuggle up to "Dusty" the dog and begin suckling. Witnesses were even more amazed when they realized that the dog began producing milk to accommodate her newly-adopted pig. Sherry Summers of Frederick County told reporters that it happened the second the two were introduced. The 22-day-old potbellied pig simply thought Dusty was her mother, she says. "They play together all day long," Ms. Summers adds.

Recent Publications Robert P. Swierenga, Don Sinnema, and Hans Krabbendam, eds., The Dutch in Urban America. (Holland, MI: Joint Archives, 2004), 156 pp. isbn 0-9748422-0-6. The Dutch were among the least urban of all immigrant groups. Yet on the east and west coasts, two-thirds of the Dutch immigrants lived in urban centers, while in the Midwest the urban proportion was closer to one-third. As a specific group and locale, the urban Dutch received little attention from immigrant scholars. This volume of essays adds a welcome chapter to Dutch immigration history by presenting recent research and providing an overview of the Dutch experience in urban America. The city colonies were a crucial part of the Dutch immigrant network. The ten essays cover the Dutch in Chicagoland and Detroit, their commercial, educational and religious experiences, activities of Dutch consuls in American cities, and connections between urban and rural Dutch immigrants. Hans Krabbendam and Derek Rubin, eds.
