Vicente Blasco Ibanez
Dès sa jeunesse, Vicente Blasco 1banez, né en 1867 à Valence (Espagne), est Passionné de liberté et hostile à la monarchie, ce qui lui vaut une vie mouvementée, après ses débuts de journaliste à Madrid (1883) : réfugié à Paris (1889), amnistié (1891), député de Valence (1892), emprisonné (1898).
Ecrivain déjà célèbre quand il va en Amérique latine (1909), il revient en 1914 pour soutenir la cause de la France et de ses allies. Opposé à la dictature qui sévit dans sa patrie, il s'exile en France (1923) et meurt à Menton en 1928.
Dans l'ombre de la cathédrale (1903), Arènes sanglantes (1908), Les quatre cavaliers de l'Apocalypse (1916), Première étape d'une trilogie comprenant Mare Nostrum (1918) et Les ennemis de la femme (1919) sont parmi les ouvrages les plus marquants de son abondante production littéraire.
