William Blake was born 28 November 1757, third and strangest son of James Blake and his wife Catherine . His life started off weird and never improved. At the tender age of four, he had his first vision . Though his parents may have thought it was all right at first, his father was very upset William was still having them at eight. James decided, probably quite rightly, not to put William in school. He learned to read and write at home, and also showed a great aptitude for drawing. He was sent to a drawing school at age ten, and his father arranged for William to be apprenticed to an engraver as soon as he was old enough William bought every print he could possibly afford. He drew sketches of monuments throughout the London area. Oh, yes, and he also wrote some poetry. His first collection (published 1783) was the Poetical Sketches , lyric poems written between the ages of twelve and twenty. Though mostly derivative of other poets' work, these early poems show the beginnings of the Romantic ideas of emotion over form

William Blake (1757-1827)
One of the most baffling (as well as truly original) figures in English literature, William Blake, was born in London in 1757. At times in his writing as simple as a child, at other times so ecstatic that he appears insane, he seemed driven throughout his life by a tremendous impulse to express himself, regardless of conventions or popular approval.

Blake was a painter and an engraver as well as a poet, often combining all his arts in the production of a piece. Nearly all his books, in fact, were published by Blake himself. He engraved the poem upon a plate, with the illustration or design to fit it; and his devoted wife bound the printed sheets into a book. His best lyrics appeared in Poetical Sketches (1783), Songs of Innocence (1789), and Songs of Experience (1794). In addition to his poems, he composed a large number of "prophetic books," weird in their fantasy, obscure, and difficult; and several books in which he pleaded the cause of liberty. Among the drawings that he made for writings by others may be mentioned his illustrations for the Book of Job (considered by some as his best), for Dante's Divine Comedy, and for poems of Young and Blair and Gray. William Blake , 1757-1827, was an English poet, artist, engraver, and publisher. His writings and art are extraordinary. They have been a source of inspiration to me over 30 years. Here are some William Blake pages on the web. Exhibit at the Tate! Britain's Tate Gallery presents a comprehensive exhibition of Blake as an artist, as a poet, and as a man. (This was at the Tate 9 November 2000 - 11 February 2001, then to the Metropolitan March 29 - June 24, 2001. The Online Exhibits are still up!) Giles Murray has produced an 88 page educational Online Interactive Exhibit to accompany the exhibition, featuring recordings of the Songs, an interactive guide to Blake's London, a dictionary of Blake's characters, and an Amazing Facts about Blake game for a teenage audience, and their arrangement and display here seems ideally suited to present these themes vividly and intelligently. QUOTATIONS FROM WILLIAM BLAKE
    How do you know but every bird that cuts the airy way, is an immense world of delight, closed by your senses five?
    Seest thou the little winged fly, smaller than a grain of sand?
    It has a heart like thee, a brain open to heaven and hell,
    Withinside wondrous and expansive; its gates are not closed;
    I hope thine are not.

    COMMENTARY
    William Blake (1757-1827), the English poet, painter, engraver, and printer - a man of many trades - was also a mystic who had insight into his true nature. The essence of mysticism is the awakening to, and letting go into, who one really is - the Godhead in Meister Eckhart's language, the Beloved in Jalaladin Rumi's, the Self in Ramana Maharshi's, the Unborn in Bankei's. A rose by any other name will smell as sweet. The nature of our true Self, our innermost identity, is boundlessness, stillness, timelessness, capacity for the world. This is also the innermost identity of every being in the cosmos - including the birds in the air, and the 'little winged fly'. Animals, birds, fish, insects - all are unselfconsciously open to the living cosmos. Humans on the other hand have become self-conscious. We can see ourselves as others see us, and to a large extent identify with this image. This self-consciousness is a profoundly significant step away from animal 'unselfconsciousness'. From this developed sense of our place in the world flows language, culture, civilisation, science, technology, art, literature.

    The Gothic Life of William Blake: 1757-1827
    Quite possibly the Greatest British Poet and Artist to Ever Live. William Blake may not fit into the role of what we consider to be a "modern goth"... but his poetry and art about sex, love, religion and especially death marks him as a goth within the Romanticist period of art. He was a poet, an artist, a sexual liberator, a political activist and devoutly against the corruption within the Catholic Church. His art about Dante in particularly shows his allegories against the Catholic church and the politics of death. Poet, printmaker, visionary, the British artist William Blake (1757-1827) made work that is both profoundly personal and universal. Tate Britain is now presenting the most comprehensive exhibition of Blake's work ever held (9 November - 11 February 2001). The aim is to show Blake as an artist, as a poet and as a man. Blake saw himself as a medieval craftsman, not a sophisticated modern artist, and this part of the exhibition examines how the gothic world influenced his art, imagination and ideals. Blake did not become famous in his own lifetime. Only after his death did his fame spread wildly.
