William Blake (British, 1757-1827) Biography English painter, engraver and poet, born in London. From the age of seven he habitually saw a white-bearded God peering in through his window, or angels perching in trees. An admirer of D¼rer, Michelangelo and Raphael and a friend of Fuseli , Blake was extremely eccentric. He walked the streets in a Phrygian bonnet. His work, still obscure, suggests a new version of Christianity, whose radicalism lies in its visual Symbolism. A precursor of the Pre-Raphaelites and Symbolists. BIOGRAPHY - William Blake, (1757-1827)
BLAKE, WILLIAM (1757—1827), English poet and painter, was born in London, on the 28th of November 1757. His father, James Blake, kept a hosier’s shop in Broad Street, Golden Square; Ind from the scanty education which the young artist received, it may be judged that the circumstances of the family were not very prosperous. For the facts of William Blake’s early life the world is indebted to a little book, called A Father’s Iviemoirs on a Child,’ written by Dr Malkin in 1806. Here we learn that young Blake quickly developed a taste for design, which his father appears to have had sufficient intelligence to recognize and assist by every means in his power.
This is in brief all that is known of Blake’s artistic education. That he ever, at the academy or elsewhere, systematically studied painting we do not know; but that he had already begun the practice of water colour for himself is ascertained. So far, however, the course of his training in art schools, and under Basire, was calculated to render him proficient only as a draughtsman and an engraver. He had learned how to draw, and he had mastered besides the practical difficulties of engraving, and with these qualifications he entered upon his career. In 1780 he exhibited a picture in the Royal Academy Exhibition, conjectured to have been executed in water colours, and he continued to contribute to the annual exhibitions up to the year 1808.
In 1782 he married Catherine Boucher, the daughter of a marketgardener at Battersea, with whom he lived always on affectionate terms, and the young couple after ‘their marriage established themselves in Green Street, Leicester Fields. Blake had already become acquainted with some of the rising artists of his time, amongst them Stothard, Flaxman and Fuseli, and he now began to see something of literary society. At the house of the Rev. Henry Mathew, in Rathbone Place, he used to recite and sometimes to sing poems of his own composition, and it was through the influence of this gentleman, combined with that of Flaxman, that Blake’s first volume of poetry was printed and published in 1783.

s one of the most curious and significant figures in the history od English literature, Blake is renown as a poet, mystic , painter and engraver. With these talents he influenced both literature and graphic arts. His mystical abilities appeared in childhood when he began experiencing visions of angels and spiritual monks, later on these visions included the Angel Gabriel, the Virgin Mary, and other historical figures. It might be thought, as so often happens, that his parents would have discouraged him from these thoughts, but they did not.
His parents and relatives were of humble people. Although Blake is a common Irish name, the family's ancestry is dubious. Later the poet W. B. Yeats , an ardent devotee of Blake and editor of his literary works, would have it believed that Blake came directly from Irish ancestry, but this is contradicted by Martin J. Blake in his genealogical work, Blake Family Records
Blake, born in London, spent most of his life there. Since his parents knew of his early visions they offered to help him to become a painter. Blake was attracted to the position but generously pointer out that such an apprenticeship would be costly, and such an expense would not be fair to his other brothers and sisters, since his father's income as a hosier was not a large one. He entered the apprenticeship as an engraver, not just that the training was less expensive, but also because the profession was likely to yield a faster return.

He was the one of the first writers of the "Romantic Period." Before this period, most writers, such as Alexander Pope, wrote more for form instead of for content. Blake, on the other hand, turned back to Elizabethan and early seventeenth-century poets, and other eighteenth- century poets outside the tradition of Pope. Blake was not always a poet. In fact, his only formal training was in art. At the age of ten, he entered a drawing school. He later studied at the Royal Academy of Arts. Blake became an apprentice under James Basire, a well-known engraver, at the age of fourteen and remained his apprentice for seven years. Blake found that he had quite a bit of free time. During this time, he read and soon began to try writing poetry. In 1788, at the age of thirty-one, Blake began to experiment with relief etching, which was the method used to produce most of his books of poems. He called this method "illuminated printing." He wrote the text of his poems on copper plates with pens and brushes, using an acid-resistant medium. The illustrations were also drawn onto the plates. He then etched the plates in acid in order to eat away the untreated copper and leave the design standing. The pages printed from these plates then had to be colored by hand in water colors and stiched together to make up a volume. Blake used illuminated printing for four of his works. These included "Songs of Innocence and Experience," "The Book of Thel," "The Marriage of Heaven and Hell," and "Jerusalem."

Search all of William Blake William Blake (1757-1827) was a British poet, painter, visionary mystic, and engraver, who illustrated and printed his own books. Blake proclaimed the supremacy of the imagination over the rationalism and materialism of the 18th- century. Misunderstanding shadowed his career as a writer and artist and it was left to later generations to recognize his importance.
Blake was born in London, where he spent most of his life. His father was a successful London hosier who encouraged Blake's artistic talents. Blake was first educated at home, chiefly by his mother. In 1767 he was sent to Henry Pars' drawing school. Blake has recorded that from his early years, he experienced visions of angels and ghostly monks and that he saw and conversed with the angel Gabriel, the Virgin Mary, and various historical figures.
At the age of 14 Blake was apprenticed for seven years to the engraver James Basire. Gothic art and architecture influenced him deeply. In 1783 he married Catherine Boucher, the daughter of a market gardener. Blake taught her to draw and paint and she assisted him devoutly.

"Blake, William" English poet and artist A Poison Tree I was angry with my friend : I told my wrath, my wrath did end. I was angry with my foe : I told it not, my wrath did grow. And I watered it in fears, Night and morning with my tears; With soft, deceitful wiles. And it grew both day and night, Till it bore an apple bright; And my foe beheld it shine, And he knew that it was mine, And into my garden stole When the night had veiled the pole: In the morning glad I see My foe outstretched beneath the tree. - William Blake - Blake, William (1757-1827), English poet, painter, and engraver, who created a unique form of illustrated verse; his poetry, inspired by mystical vision, is among the most original lyric and prophetic in the language. Blake was born November 28, 1757, in London, where he lived most of his life. William Blake infused his poetry with mysticism and complex symbolism. He explored issues of divine love in the collection Songs of Innocence (1789), while he considered the nature of evil in Songs of Experience (1794). Blake also juxtaposed poems from the first collection with corresponding poems from the second. For example, "The Lamb" from the first collection provides a gentle counterpart to "The Tyger" (excerpt recited by an actor), from the second. In his so-called Prophetic Books, a series of longer poems written from 1789 on, Blake created a complex personal mythology and invented his own symbolic characters to reflect his social concerns. A true original in thought and expression, he declared in one of these poems
