Unless within thyself it be set up again. A woman is like a tree bearing fruit.A man is like the fruit that the tree bears....Man is to her what the pear is to the tree. The pear falls but the tree remains standing. How marvellously man is made and formed, if one only knows how to penetrate into his true nature, understand what he is, and work out all his details. And it is a great thing that you should consider: there is nothing in heaven or in earth that is not also in man.For these are the heavenly powers that work in him....God made this heaven in man great and beautiful, noble and good... He is in us and we are His temple.

Text by Elizabeth Barret Browning (1806-1861)
Music by Edward Elgar How he sleepeth! Vision unto vision calleth,
While the young child dreameth on.
Fair, O dreamer, thee befalleth With the glory thou hast won! Darker wert thou in the garden, Yestermorn, by summer sun. We should see the spirits rising Round thee, - were the clouds away. 'Tis the child-heart draws them, singing In the silent-seeming clay - Singing! - Stars that seem the mutest, Go in music, music all the day. Softly! softly! make no noises! Now he lieth still and dumb - Now he hears the angels' voices Folding silence in the room - Now he muses deep the meaning Of the Heav'nwords as they come. He is harmless - we are sinful, We are troubled - he at ease: From his slumber, virtue winful Floweth outward with increase - Dare not bless him! but be blesséd by his peace

Abrams Average review score: Getting to the Heart of Art This is a great book for artists and non artists alike. It is a useful tool for any age group in understanding visual imagery. The poetry is done in response to art that ranges in style and media, giving the reader/viewer a wide exposure to the arts. The poerty is crisp, interesting and meaningful to contemporary culture without being trite or overly stylized. This book is a great educational resource, coffee table book, or good cure for the common boredom! Best Ghost Stories Made by Dover Pubns Average review score: Unsurpassed Fiction That Will Change Your Life It's unfortunate that this collection of unequalled horror and suspense pieces goes by the name "ghost stories." In fact, there are almost no ghosts to be found in this book. Blackwood (1869-1951), who must rank as one of the greatest English language fiction writers ever, is also one of literature's best-kept secrets, a genius who exquisitely married mind-bending metaphysical revelation with unbearable suspense. Calling these "ghost stories" is like calling Moby Dick a "fishing tale" or Les Miserables a "detective story" it simply doesn't begin to reveal the scope and depth of what is contained. It's hard to compare Blackwood with any other writer, because he was so unique. He was a major influence on H. P. Lovecraft, but was vastly more compelling, subtle and profound. You might think of him as Hermann Hesse meets a maturer version of H. P. Lovecraft.

    http://www.creative.net/~alang/lit/horror/blackwd.sht
    Algernon Blackwood
E nglish writer of ghost stories and supernatural fiction, of whom Lovecraft wrote: "He is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere." His powerful story "The Willows," which effectively describes another dimension impinging upon our own, was reckoned by Lovecraft to be not only "foremost of all" Blackwood's tales but the best "weird tale" of all time. (Unfortunately, Blackwood, who was familiar with Lovecraft's work, failed to return the compliment. As he told Peter Penzoldt, he found "spiritual terror" missing in his young admirer's writing, while it was all-important in his own.)
Among his many works, Blackwood wrote a series of stories and short novels featuring John Silence, a "physician extraordinary" or psychic detective. He also wrote light fantasy and children's books, but best remembered for his ghost stories.
The son of a preacher, Blackwood was always interested in the supernatural, the occult and spiritualism and was a firm believer in the higher powers of humanity. Episodes Before Thirty (1923) tells of his lean years as a journalist in New York. In the late 1940s, Blackwood had a television program on the BBC on which he read . . . ghost stories!
