The great H.P. Lovecraft wrote of Algernon Blackwood: "He is the one absolute and unquestioned master of weird atmosphere." Blackwood [1869-1951] was a prolific writer of what is usually described as "supernatural suspense", and his output consisted of over 200 short stories, 12 novels, several plays and an autobiography. Sadly today most of his work is out of print, and what little is left is relegated to the dusty back shelves, somewhat insultingly filed next to Stephen King and Dean Koontz. A restless, searching world traveler and lover of nature, Blackwood was most interested in the intersection of the spiritual world and the natural world, and singlehandedly invented the genre sometimes referred to as "nature horror", borrowed to almost-plagiaristic extremes in the film The Blair Witch Project One of Blackwood's more readily available collections, Best Ghost Stories is horribly misnamed: there's hardly a ghost on display in all of its terrifying pages. The publisher perhaps thought that Blackwood's uncatagorizable stories would sell better with the promise of some poltergeists attached. Though all of the collection's tales are top-notch, it includes two of what are considered Blackwood's best pieces

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition This is a list of some notable authors The word author has several meanings:
  • The author of a book, story, article or the like, is the person who has written it (or is writing it). This can be short or long, fiction or nonfiction, poetry or prose, technical or literature; in particular it is a profession (doing this for pay).
  • An author is someone who originates or causes or initiates something.

Although a good deal of it is about the supernatural, any fiction with a morbid, gruesome, surreal, suspenseful or frightening theme may be termed "horror"; conversely, many stories of the supernatural are not horror. Horror fiction often overlaps with science fiction and fantasy, all of which form the umbrella category speculative fiction.

Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) was a prolific fantasy and horror writer whose total production consists of more than 200 short stories, 12 novels, a couple of plays, an autobiography and even some poetry. Over 50 distinct book editions of his works have been published in the US and UK, counting the reprint collections. Today, his books are mostly out of print, but he is far from forgotten. His style of writing is very intense emotionally, and holds a strong fascination for the reader. The supernatural element is carefully woven into the plot which often turns the ordinary and familiar into something mysterious and awesome. Many of his tales take place outdoors in some magnificent setting of nature, like the wilderness of Canada, the swamplands of the Danube river or the Black Forest in Germany. Nature spirits, haunted houses, the spirits of the dead and other ancient sorceries all abound in his strange tales. Blackwood's private life was almost as odd and mysterious as his tales. A travelling man, he saw a great many places in the world. He was born in Kent, England, 1869. As a young man, he lived in New York and later on settled in Switzerland. Before that he had been moose hunting in Canada, hiking in Italy, France and Spain, and touring in Egypt, Austria and Sweden. After WWI, he found himself back in England. Besides writing, his activities were very diverse. He served as a secret agent in Switzerland at the end of WWI. His interest in the supernatural led him to visiting a spiritualist camp, exploring haunted houses and seeking out gurus like Gurdjieff and Ouspensky in France at a time when they were fashionable amongst the artistic jet set of the day.

P. Lovecraft, rate Algernon Blackwood (1869-1951) as the finest such writer of all. What Arthur Conan Doyle was to mysteries, what Jane Austen was to comedies of manners, Blackwood was to supernatural horror literature he set the standard, was unsurpassed in originality, and reads as freshly while surprising and shocking the reader as much now as the day he wrote his remarkable work, leaving the likes of Stephen King, Clive Barker and Anne Rice in the dust. Sadly, most of Blackwood's large output about 10 book-length novels, over 200 short stories and novelettes, and numerous essays, reviews, plays etc. are long out of print and can often only be found in large libraries and through used and antiquarian book suppliers. This volume, prepared by preeminent Blackwood scholar Mike Ashley, is an exhaustive listing and description of everything Blackwood ever had published or exists in known manuscript, plus the fullest biography of Blackwood ever written. (Ashley is currently researching for a much longer, book-length biography of Blackwood, but it won't include this extensive bibliographic material.)

He would be staring drowsily at the dying fire, perhaps counting the stockings and flannel garments that hung along the high fender rail when, suddenly, a person looked in with lightning swiftness through the door and vanished again before he could possibly turn his head to see. The appearance and disappearance were accomplished with amazing rapidity always. Where it waited no one could ever guess. It came probably, he felt, from beyond the house, possibly from the roof, but most likely from the garden or the sky. Yet, though strange, it was not terrible. It was a kindly and protective figure, he felt. And when it happened he never called for help, because the occurrence simply took his voice away.
