Richard Doddridge Blackmore 1825-1900
R.D. Blackmore Richard Doddridge Blackmore was born on 7th June 1825 in Longworth, Berkshire, where his father, John Blackmore, was Curate-in-charge of the parish. Only a few months after his birth his mother died - the victim of and outbreak of typhus which occurred in the village. After this loss John Blackmore moved to his native West Country, first to Culmstock, Devon and then to Ashford in the same county. Richard, however, was taken by his aunt, Mary Frances Knight, and after her marriage to the Rev. Richard Gordon, moved with her to Elsfield rectory near Oxford. His father married again in 1831 whereupon Richard returned to live with him in Devon. Here he grew to know and love the countryside which was to figure do prominently in his most famous novel. In 1837, Blackmore entered Blundell’s School in Tiverton. Here he excelled in classical studies and later won a scholarship to Oxford, where he took his degree in 1847. During a university vacation he made his first attempt at writing a novel. This was the beginning of

THE HIBBERT ASSEMBLY
Richard Doddridge Blackmore (1825-1900) R.D. Blackmore is best known as the author of the novel Lorna Doone. His father was a minister in the Church of England. His mother died of typhus fever when he was only a few months old and his father then moved to the parish of Culmstock, near Barnstaple in Devon, which was to become Blackmore's favourite county and which provided the setting for Lorna Doone. He was educated at Blundell's School, Tiverton , where he became head boy, and Exeter College, Oxford. In 1852 he was called to the bar but had to give up his work as a barrister because of epilepsy. He turned to teaching, at Wellesley House School, Twickenham Common, but a substantial legacy from his uncle gave him freedom from any futher worries about money. He bought 12 acres of land at Teddington, built a house and established a market garden. His grapes, nectarines, peaches and pears, as well as flowers, were sold at Covent Garden market. Blackmore's first novel, Clara Vaughan, was published in 1864. Lorna Doone was his third novel and came out in 1869.

  • Bertha Bampfylde Page 1 of 2 R D Blackmore - 'The Maid of Sker' The Victorian novelist R.D.Blackmore (1825-1900) achieved fame with his famous classic "Lorna Doone", and also wrote another novel entitled "The Maid of Sker", published in 1872.
He considered The Maid of Sker to be the better work, but that was neither the view of his contemporaries nor posterity.
R.D.Blackmore was the son of the Rev John Blackmore and Anne Bassett knight who hailed from the Nottage Court family of that name. She died almost immediately after giving birth to the boy, and in consequence he was brought up by her family at Nottage, and was familiar with the district, its history and its folklore.
It is strange therefore that any similarity between his novel and the traditional story of The Maid of Sker is purely co-incidental...
In fact "The Maid" plays only a minor role in the story which revolves around the exploits of David Llewelyn, a fisherman and former seaman from Newton Nottage.
It is he who tells the story, and at the outset informs the reader that he is a grandfather recently widowed after 28 years of marriage in the year 1782. Later he goes on to describe his exploits during 18 years service when he rejoined the Royal Navy.

There was more than one Maid of Sker. In truth, however, the title properly belongs to Elizabeth the daughter of Issac Williams who died in 1776.
The other real-life "Maid of Sker" was Martha Howells (b.1771).
Both these were daughters of well-to-do gentleman Tennent farmers who lived and worked the farm at Sker House.
R.D.Blackmore's ficticious "Maid of Sker" was called Bertha Bampfylde and the book (Maid of Sker) was first published in 1872. The Victorian novelist R.D.Blackmore (1825-1900) achieved fame with his classic "Lorna Doone".
