This Tract Book was reconstructed by Duke Vickrey from the General Land Office Automated Records - Florida (Release 2). NEIGHBORS - When searching for neighbors of an ancestor, keep in mind that a neighbor may be located in the same Section or in an adjacent Section. An adjacent Section may have a greatly different description. For example, within the same Township, Section 9 is contiguous with Sections 3, 4, 5, 8, 10, 15, 16, and 17. And Sections which border another Township or Range, are contiguous with sections in that other Township or Range. For example, Section 4 of T2N R1E borders Sections 33 of T3N R1E and is contiguous with Sections 32 and 34 of that other Township. Reference to a map is useful when using a Tract Book. PARTS OF SECTIONS - Grants were typically made in quadrants of a Section (e.g., NW quarter of Section 1), and frequently in quadrants of a quadrant (e.g., NW quarter of the NW quarter of Section 1). Where Sections were of an unusual shape or size or were to be divided into small parcels for a town, the part of the Section in the grant may be indicated by Lot number. Where no quadrants or lot numbers are shown, the grant was for the entire section.

Pioneer Cemetery Back to Monroe County The first cemetery established at Paris was just north of the railroad. There are approximately 200 graves in it that are still marked by headstones. The city has had the stones reset in concrete and the grounds have been cleaned up and a fence eected around them to prevent trespassing. Many names famous in early Monroe County history are to be found in this old burial place. This article was published by the newspaper "The Appeal" and it attempts to give as complete as possible list of those buried in this old cemetery. Some stones indicate a single date and that is the death date.

GUIDE TO SELECTED MANUSCRIPT COLLECTIONS
in the University of Arkansas Libraries
by Samuel A. Sizer
Guide to Selected Manuscript Collections was compiled in 1976 by Samuel A. Sizer, then Curator of Special Collections in the University of Arkansas Libraries. It contains brief descriptions of 211 collections, including a few that had not been processed at that time. The on line version updates the 1976 Sizer Guide to reflect work done on those collections in the division since then, and entries are integrated into the alphabetical list and the subject lists of electronic finding aids elsewhere on the Special Collections web site. A paper copy of the complete original Guide is available. At present, some manuscript collections in the division are accessible only through typewritten finding aids in the division reading room. However, as time and other resources permit, these are being converted to computer files and published on the Special Collections web site. Meanwhile, researchers should contact the division for further information. A B C D ... Y A] ALEXANDER, HENRY MACMILLAN, 1905-1969.

Edmond John Peter Schmitt Papers (CSCT)
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Rev. Edmond John Peter Schmitt was born 16 March 1865 in New Albany, Indiana. He was the third child of Peter and Magdalena (Mouth) Schmitt, German-speaking immigrants from Lorraine, France. Schmitt spent most of his childhood in New Albany and attended the parochial schools of St. Mary's Church in that town for over eight years. Because of his father's pecuniary losses, young Edmond left school to work in a dry goods store (Scott's Blue Front store) and as a druggist. Anxious to complete his education, Edmond continued to study privately during the next five years and also began to collect a library. After his eighteenth birthday, Schmitt entered St. Meinrad's College, a school run by the Benedictine Fathers in Spencer County, Indiana, with the intention of entering the priesthood. Schmitt's parents somewhat opposed his vocational goal, fearing that their son's health was too delicate for such strenuous work. However, Edmond's purpose was serious and, after condensing the five-year classical course into two years, he entered the theological seminary at St. Meinrad's in 1885-86. There he completed a two-year course in philosophy and a three-year course in theology. During his years at St. Meinrad's, Schmitt became interested in historical research and began to write on various topics. He was a frequent contributor, under the pen name "Edmond Faber," to local newspapers and periodicals, including

Quantity: 52 boxes, 2 v., 2 portfolio boxes (26 linear ft.) Abstract: Correspondence, compositions, and diaries of American novelist William Dean Howells as well as papers of his wife and children.
Administrative Information
Acquisition Information: The collection of correspondence and manuscripts of William Dean Howells and his family began in 1937 when the Harvard College Library purchased an important group of letters to William Dean Howells from Miss Mildred Howells and her brother Mr. John Mead Howells. The remaining papers have been presented to The Library by Miss Howells and her brother in small lots over the years from 1938 to the present. In this inventory the distinction between manuscripts acquired by purchase in 1937 and the later gifts has been made clear by cataloguing the two groups separately within each "collection." The accession numbers for the gifts appear with the item. In the cases where interfiling of gift and purchase was deemed appropriate, the old catalogue number "800.20" listed with the item indicates a manuscript acquired by purchase.
