    Earl Derr Biggers

Known for his comic sense, Earl Derr Biggers was known to the public as one of the foremost writers of mystery and detective stories in this country. To his friends he was known for his comic sense.
It carried him through the solemnities of a literary course at Harvard, class of 1907, where he recalled being told that Fielding, Smollett and Richardson were dead and that we would never see their like again. He preferred Rudyard Kipling and Richard Harding Davis and, in his undergraduate days, considered Franklin P. Adams a better story-teller than Oliver Goldsmith.
When he said so to his classmates they told each other that it was because he came from the wild and untamed WestWarren, Ohio, where he was born in 1884. Biggers said they read Keats to one another in the twilight at Harvard at that time, urging him to leave the room before they began.
A professor listened to his preferences sadly and moaned,"Oh, Biggers, Biggers, why will you be so contemporary!"
In due course he emerged from Harvard a Bachelor of Arts and immediately went to work on The Boston Traveler, writing a humorous column, later criticizing the drama, until 1911.

Berg on November 20, 2001 at 04:11:26: : : Does the phrase "he's sticking to his guns" usually imply that the individual referred to has made a moral commitment, or simply that he is stubborn, has dug in his heels, and is possibly desperate? Thanks. -Patty : To my ear it has the former connotation. Gun-sticking is the work of heroes, not villains. I vote heroes. From the archives: STICK TO YOUR GUNS/STAND TO YOUR GUNS - It's a military term. The "Random House Dictionary of Popular Proverbs and Sayings" by Gregory Y. Titelman. (Random House, New York, 1996) states: "Stick to your guns - hold to your convictions and rights. The proverb has been traced back to the 'Life of Samuel Johnson' by James Bobswell (1740-95). It was first attested in the United States in 'Seven Keys to Baldpate (1913) by Earl Derr Biggers (1884-1933)." From the "Encyclopedia of Word and Phrase Origins" by Robert Hendrickson (Facts on File, New York, 1997): the term may be military in origin and lists a mention of the term "as late as 1839, in a popular novel called 'Ten Thousand a Year' the words put in the mouth of a civilian named Mr. Titmouse." "Fighting Words: From War, Rebellion, and Other Combative Capers" by Christine Ammer (NTC Publishing Group, Chicago, 1989) has the most detailed explanation, ".Less in doubt than managing to hit a target was a gunner's obligation to stay at his post, whence the British term 'stand to one's guns' (in America, 'stick to one's guns'), meaning to persist and not give way. James Boswell, Samuel Johnson's biographer, writes in 1769, 'Mrs. Thrale stood to her gun with great courage in defense of amorous ditties.' A more perplexing use of this phrase occurred in a 1909 account about the staunchly pacifist Society of Friends: 'The Quakers stood to their guns, and without any resort to brute force, finally won.'"

Kenny Prolific American author, whose best-known works center on the lawyer-detective Perry Mason, his helpmates the loyal and beautiful secretary Della Street, the private detective Paul Drake, and the opponent, District Attorney Hamilton Burger. Gardner worked as a professional attorney for twenty-two years. He was an ardent sportsman, an enthusiastic wildlife photographer, and a constant traveler, who spoke fluent Chinese. "Murder is not perpetrated in a vacuum. It is a product of greed, avarice, hate, revenge, or perhaps fear. As a splashing stone sends ripples to the farthest edges of the pond, murder affects the lives of many people." (from The Case of the Horrified Heirs Erle Stanley Gardner was born in Malden, Massachusetts. His father, who was a mining engineer, took the family west to Portland, Oregon. Three years later his father found employment as a mining engineer in Klondike. Finally the family settled in the small mining town of Oroville. During these years Gardner also picked up knowledge of mining, which was reflected later in his novels. In 1909 he graduated from Palo Alto High School, in the San Francisco Bay Are. In his youth Gardner led a wild life. He was kicked out of Valparaiso University in Indiana after some weeks - he was involved in a fistfigh. Later he boxed and arranged unlicenced wrestling matches. While working as a typist in an law office in California, he 'read law' without formal instructions and was admitted to the bar in 1911. At the age of twenty-one, Gardner opened his own law office in Merced, California. The business was bad.

CHARLIE CHAN The character Charlie Chan was called into being by author Earl Derr Biggers (1884 - 1933). His first appearance in the film business was in 1929 but only as a fringe character. But soon Twentieth Century Fox moved the detectiv into the centre of the action and the actor Warner Oland became the first player of the Chinese detective. The first movie was shot under the title "Charlie Chan Carries On" in 1931. The stories had been created by a simple but very successful formula. Charlie Chan, employee of the Honolulu Police Department and marvellous detective was highly esteemed worldwide. The murder cases in which he was involved normally happened at exceptional or exotic scenes - usually not in Honolulu itself. He was supported by his sons. They weren't called by their real names but as son no. 1 or son no. 2, always in chronological order. The greatest goal of his sons was to follow Charlie Chans footsteps which turned out to be too big. His sons were normally more a handicap for Charlie Chan than a help and they supplied the comical aspects in the black and white movies. The cases were solved brilliantly "in spite of" the help of his sons. The famous one of the sons - son no. 1 - was played by actor Keye Luke (1904 - 1991) from 1935.
One of the most prominent traits of Charlie Chan was to cite wise quotations of the great Konfuzius.
