The Devil's Dictionary
- Book Review, by Bierce, Ambrose Gwinnett
The Merriam-Webster Encyclopedia of Literature

Satiric lexicon by Ambrose Bierce, first compiled as The Cynic's Word Book in 1906 and reissued under the author's preferred title five years later. The barbed definitions that Bierce began publishing in the Wasp, a weekly journal he edited in San Francisco from 1881 to 1886, brought this 19th-century stock form to a new level of artistry. Employing a terse, aphoristic style, Bierce lampooned social, professional, and religious convention, as in his definitions for bore"A person who talks when you wish him to listen"; architect"One who drafts a plan of your house, and plans a draft of your money"; and saint"A dead sinner revised and edited." Many of the entries include "authenticating" citations from spurious scholarly sources.

Gahan Wilson's work appears regularly in The New Yorker and Playboy; he illustrated the Classics Illustrated version of Poe's The Raven and Other Stories.

And better, still, " KISS , n. A word invented by the poets as a rhyme for "bliss." His cynical humor and powerful short stories, born from his experiences as a Union officer in the American Civil War, have been described as having a "Northern Mark Twain " style. Of Bierce's famous war tale, An Occurrence At Owl Creek Bridge (1890), writer Stephen Crane said, "Nothing better existsthe story has everything." In 1887, Bierce joined William Randolph Hearst's San Francisco Examiner as a columnist. Known for his lively wordplay and macabre sense of humor , he kept a skull on his desk and claimed it belonged to a rival critic Death is not the end," wrote the man nicknamed "Bitter Bierce," "the devil's lexicographer," and "Acid Pen," "there remains litigation over the estate."

Murphy's Law:
Ambrose Bierce (1999)
by John Patrick Michael Murphy
Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914?) was one of the foremost writers of the 19th - century. His stories of war, of despair, of horror, of the mysterious, were epoch defining and continue to influence literature. For his wit he was called the Mark Twain of the North. He was the chum of Jack London and the mentor of H. L. Mencken . The very first tract he wrote was a defense of atheism and freethought, a theme he would never leave. His meager childhood was brightened, and he was ultimately empowered by his father, who gave him the love of history and literature. At 19 he enlisted, and was seared by his experiences in the Civil War, where he served with distinction. Afterwards, he wrote over a thousand columns for various newspapers. William Randolph Hearst secured him as soon as he acquired the San Francisco Examiner . There he stayed for over 20 years. All the while Bierce wrote war stories, horror stories, novels, and short stories of the mysterious and the macabre. Apparently he wrote because he had to, to get it out, to deal with it, to survive the impact of the Civil War on his life — he had to tell of the headless corpses, the boar-eaten bodies of the fallen men, the blood, the screams. Bierce wrote of the insanity to keep depression from taking him. He challenged his country to become civilized enough to admit its hypocrisies, pretensions and its crassness.

O Amargo Bierce

I was from USA, and I lived from 1842-1914. Print or Buy my poetry? View comments Add to favorites? Ambrose Bierce was the author of supernatural stories that have secured his place in both the weird tradition and in American letters at large. The stories in his two primary volumes, Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (a.k.a., In the Midst of Life, 1892) and Can Such Things Be? (1893) often added a Western setting to Gothic fiction and, more importantly, developed the psychological aspects of horror first recognized by Poe.
He is also noted for his tales of the Civil War, which drew on his own experience as a Union cartographer and officer. His first job in journalism was as editor for the San Francisco News-Letter and California Advertiser (1868-72), writing the entries of the "Town Crier" which constituted the first real newspaper column. Perhaps we can say that his true love was satire in any form whether ghost story or fable, newspaper column or lyrical lambaste, fantasy or pseudo-lexicography.

But when you and your 12 siblings are all given names beginning with the letter 'A', you tend to see things differently. Ambrose Gwinett Bierce (1842-1914?) was a veteran of the American Civil War (serving for the DamnYankees ). Yet the horrors of war dulled not his wit or sense of humor. Nor did the bullet lodged within his skull behind his left ear - a souvenir of the a battle at Kenesaw Mountain. If anything the war intensified his scrutiny of all life's pleases and travails, and he made one see like the other. After the war, Bierce settled in San Francisco, a city known to proof cynics alongside of sourdough (which explain part of your humble editor's disposition). From there Bierce exploited the writing trades as a satirist, short-story writer, and journalist. From San Francisco, he journeyed to London in 1872, finding even more fertile ground to spread the cynics seed.

"Bitter Bierce" - American newspaper columnist, satirist, essayist, short-story writer, and novelist, an enigmatic figure, who disappeared in the Mexican Revolution. His end is still a mystery, but he is presumed to have died in the siege of Ojinega on 11 January 1914. Bierce is best-known for his numerous short stories collected in TALES OF SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS (1891), which show the influence of Edgar Allan Poe. However, Bierce himself was annoyed by comparisons, and as a literary critic he was against realism. When Stephen Crane published his novel about the Civil War, The Red Badge of Co...
