Apart from a few well-anthologized ghost stories (notably, "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge"), Bierce is best remembered for his cynical but humorous Devil's Dictionary.
Bierce was born in Ohio on June 24, 1842. He served as an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865. He is noted for his tales of the Civil War, which drew on his own experience as a Union cartographer and officer. His first job in journalism was as editor for the San Francisco News-Letter and California Advertiser. His true love was satire in any form whether ghost story or fable, newspaper column or lyrical lambaste, fantasy or pseudo-lexicography. His works added a Western setting to Gothic fiction and, more importantly, developed the psychological aspects of horror first recognized by Poe.
In time, Bierce established himself a kind of literary dictator of the West Coast and was so respected and feared as a critic that his judgment could "make or break" an aspiring author's reputation. Between the years 1887 and 1906, Bierce wrote his famous column, "The Prattler". He collected his sardonic aphorisms and epigrams as

Yes, I love Ambrose Bierce. His satire can be a bit darker than Twain's, from what I've read of the two authors. Have you come across the "Satirewire" web site? It's not actively updated any more, but it's still there and I think you might enjoy Andrew Marlatt's writing if you liked Bierce and Twain.

    Civil War Stories
    Author Info: Ambrose Bierce
Ambrose Bierce is as famous for the circumstances surrounding the end of his life as for his bitter fatalistic prose. Bierce was a journalist/author and a Civil War veteran. In 1913, after the breakup of his marriage and the death of his sons, he set out for Mexico to meet Pancho Villa and observe the Mexican Revolution at first hand. He wrote to a friend: Goodbye, if you hear of my being stood up against a Mexican stone wall and shot to rags, please
know that I think it a pretty good way to depart this life. It beats old age, disease, or falling down
the cellar stairs. To be a Gringo in Mexicoah, that is euthanasia! With that, he disappeared into Mexico and was never heard from again, fueling wild speculation about his fate (i.e., Carols Fuentes' novel The Old Gringo ). A fitting end for an author whose works combined a bleak view of life with elements of mystery. Bierce's Civil War stories are bleak little tales of death and destruction. There's one here that nicely captures his cynical world viewmost of us saw a film version of it in grade school

    Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914)
Article # : Section : BOOK WORLD Issue Date : 2,883 Words Author : James Thompson
Bierce enlisted early in the war, the spontaneous idealism of youth quickened by the lure of glory and the righteousness of the Union cause. Mustered out near the end, he abandoned his innocence and optimism on the battlefields of the South. As Melville observed in one of his war poems, "what like a bullet can undeceive."
Working as a newspaperman in San Francisco after the war, Bierce poured his bitterness and disillusionment into an acerbic commentary that terrorized those who tempted his ire. Dipping his pen in "wormwood and acid," as a friend remarked, Bierce lashed out at the greed, corruption, hypocrisy, and foolishness that thrived in the Gilded Age. But he was no crusading reformer driven by a need to cure the world's ills. Perhaps he was more the disappointed lover, avenging himself upon the nation that had demanded so much of his youthful self, only to betray his sacrifice.
Having survived into his seventies, Bierce scripted his own final act. In 1913, afflicted with a sickness of the soul that would not abate, he plunged into the maelstrom of another civil war, this one in Mexico, and never resurfaced. With an insouciance rooted in despair, he scribbled a farewell note to his niece: "If you hear of my being stood up against a Mexican wall and shot to rags, please know that I think that a pretty good way to depart this life. It beats old age, disease or falling down the cellar stairs. To be a Gringo in Mexicoah, that is euthanasia!"

    Bierce, Ambrose
American satirist, short-story writer, and journalist, born in Meigs County, Ohio. He served in the Union army during the American Civil War (1861-1865) and as a result of distinguished service went west with a military expedition. He settled in San Francisco and wrote brief, witty political pieces and a column for the News-Letter; by 1868 he had become editor of the paper. He moved to London in 1872 and the caustic sketches and stories he wrote for the magazines Fun and Figaro, under the pen name of Dod Grile, were published as Cobwebs from an Empty Skull (1874).
Bierce returned to San Francisco in 1877, writing for the Argonaut, editing the Wasp, and writing a column for the Sunday Examiner, owned by William Randolph Hearst. Bierce's wit and fascination with death and horror earned him the nickname Bitter Bierce; his mastery of the short story was compared favorably with that of the American writers Edgar Allan Poe and Bret Harte. From 1899 until 1913 he worked for the Hearst interests in Washington, D.C., and revised his own works. In 1913 he went to Mexico and disappeared; he is presumed to have died there. His Collected Works were published in 12 volumes (1909-1912) and include the Devil's Dictionary, first entitled the Cynic's Wordbook (1906).
