Ambrose Bierce
A mbrose Bierce was the author of supernatural stories that have secured his place in both the weird tradition and in American letters at large. The stories in his two primary volumes, Tales of Soldiers and Civilians (a.k.a., In the Midst of Life , 1892) and Can Such Things Be? (1893) often added a Western setting to Gothic fiction and, more importantly, developed the psychological aspects of horror first recognized by Poe. He is also noted for his tales of the Civil War, which drew on his own experience as a Union cartographer and officer. His first job in journalism was as editor for the San Francisco News-Letter and California Advertiser (1868-72), writing the entries of the "Town Crier" which constituted the first real newspaper column. Perhaps we can say that his true love was satire in any form whether ghost story or fable, newspaper column or lyrical lambaste, fantasy or pseudo-lexicography. In time, Bierce established himself a kind of literary dictator of the West Coast and was so respected and feared as a critic that his judgement could "make or break" an aspiring author's reputation. Well-known by his mere initials, A.G.B., his enemies and detractors called him "Almighty God Bierce." He was also nicknamed "Bitter Bierce" and his nihilistic motto was "Nothing matters." Apart from a few well-anthologized ghost stories (notably, "An Occurence at Owl Creek Bridge"), Bierce is best remembered for his cynical but humorous Devil's Dictionary (see Publishing News, below).

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce (1842-1914) "Bitter Bierce" - American newspaper columnist, satirist, essayist, short-story writer, and novelist, an enigmatic figure, who disappeared in the Mexican Revolution. His end is still a mystery, but he is presumed to have died in the siege of Ojinega on 11 January 1914. Bierce is best-known for his numerous short stories collected in TALES OF SOLDIERS AND CIVILIANS (1891), which show the influence of Edgar Allan Poe . However, Bierce himself was annoyed by comparisons. As a literary critic he was against realism. After Stephen Crane published his famous novel about the Civil War, The Red Badge of Courage , Bierce wrote: "I had thought there could be only two worse writers than Stephen Crane, namely, two Stephen Cranes." "John Searing, a man of courage, the formidable enemy, the strong, resolute warrior, was as pale as a ghost. His jaw was fallen; his eyes protruded; he trembled in every fibre; a cold sweat bathed his entire body; he screamed with fear. He was not insane - he was terrified." (from 'One of the Missing') Ambrose Gwinnett Bierce was born in Meigs County, Ohio, as the tenth of thirteen children of Marcus and Laura Bierce. Each of the children was given a name beginning with the letter "A". Bierce's father had a large private library, and he spent much time with the books - his name Marcus Aurelius was given after the famous Roman emperor. Bierce grew up on a farm in northern Indiana. Later, in his parody of 'The Old Oaken Bucket', Bierce wrote about his early years: "With what anguish of mind I remember my childhood, / Recalled in the light of a knowledge since gained; / The malarious farm, the wet, fungus grown wildwood, / The chills then contracted that since have remained." Bierce studied year in a high school. At the age of fifteen he became a printer's apprentice on

By Stacey Ann Singletary
Student, University of North Carolina at Pembroke
Born on June 24, 1842, in Meigs County, Ohio, Ambrose Gwinnette Bierce was one of thirteen children of Marcus Aurelius and Laura Bierce. At seventeen, Bierce attended the Kentucky Military Institute and two years later he served in the Union army of the Civil War. It was in the war that Bierce discovered death and destruction. Bierce transformed these Civil War experiences into powerful short stories such as "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" and "Chickamauga." Bierce enlisted with the Ninth Indiana Infantry and fought in one of the first battles of the Civil War at Philippi, West Virginia. Only three months later did Bierce begin to battle with the effects of war as he carried one of his dying comrades across a battlefield. In 1862, the Civil War heightened, and Bierce was involved in several bloody battles at Shiloh, Chickamauga, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, and Kenesaw Mountain. As Bierce's participation in the war increased, so did his acts of bravery. Thus, he rose through the ranks to become a sergeant, then a lieutenant, and finally positioned as a topographical engineer. After receiving a severe head wound in June of 1864, his brother, Albert, nurtured Bierce back to health. Despite his second command of a leave of absence, Bierce reenlisted with the Fourth Army Corps. He was finally discharged in the spring of 1865. Bierce's literary career began shortly after his dismissal (DLB 74: 22-23).

    Ambrose Bierce (1842-1914)
    Contributing Editor: Cathy N. Davidson
    Classroom Issues and Strategies
Two primary issues present themselves in teaching "Chickamauga." First the details are grotesque. The procession of bloody, dying men and the macabre humor of the small child mounting one as he would a pony (or his father's slaves "playing horsey") often disturbs students very much. This, of course, is exactly Bierce's intention. Second, the ending seems like a gratuitous trick. Is it necessary that the child be deaf and dumb? Realistically, this is necessary since the child does not hear the great battlewe are told so explicitly. But it's also important symbolically: the temptation to war is so great in male culture that even this small child learns it, even though there is so much he does not understand. To address these issues, first I read some conventional war accounts and war storiesor even the lyrics to war songs. I then read aloud the most grotesque parts of Bierce. I next ask my students which is, in its consequence, the more violent. We then discuss protest literature and Bierce's disgust that several prominent generals of the Civil War were rewriting the incomparably brutal history of that war. Second, we go through the story isolating how the child learns, what he knows and doesn't. The picture book lesson at the beginning makes the point that a child is already learning values at the earliest age, prelinguistically. These are powerful messages, calls to violence.
