A Closer Look at the New Age Movement By Fra John Carlo Rosales, FFI The author, a deacon and theology student, writes us: "About a year ago, while I was in the waiting area of a subway station in Rome, I happened to get one of many pamphlets that were scattered around. I was surprised by its contents. It read something like this: "The New Age Movement...We use crystals...occult practices...'It seemed to say that one can try this 'New Age program as an alternative way to solve man's problems. "Some months ago I was able to watch a program by Mother Angelica. The guest speaker was Constance Cumbey, a practising American lawyer. The topic discussed was the New Age movement. I was surprised by what Ms. Cumbey related because I didn't realize that the New Age movement involved transcendental meditation, reincarnation, the use of crystals, and other strange and occult ventures. published in 1983, which covers at length the New Age Movement, a movement which is rapidly spreading. In West Germany alone there are about 500,000 adherents as well as countless sympathizers.[1]

Seventh-Day Adventist religious liberty executive
There is little doubt that religious liberty is best exercised within the setting of the secular state. This does not mean the state should be hostile or indifferent to religious bodies, but rather that it must exhibit what has been called a "benevolent neutrality." ...
Freedom of religion also implies the right not to have or profess a religion. This is sometimes overlooked. It is a sad commentary on religion that religionists, probably quite well-meaning at times, have throughout history tried to force fellow human beings into a required religious mold. Apart from the very wrong theological assumptions involved, this is a flagrant violation of the dignity of the human person. Coerced religion is demeaning and of little value.
Bert B. Beach Bright Candle of Courage, 1989, pp. 14-15, quoted from Menendez and Doerr, The Great Quotations on Religious Freedom Charles Austin Beard (1874-1948)
American historian
You need only reflect that one of the best ways to get yourself a reputation as a dangerous citizen these days is to go about repeating the very phrases which our founding fathers used in the struggle for independence.

    Annie Besant (1847 - 1933)
Annie Besant is often described as a theosophist, educator and friend of India. While all these words describe parts of her life, they do not say clearly that her whole life seems to have been a courageous search for an all-embracing truth. Born Annie Wood in Clapham, London, she had an unhappy childhood after her father's death when she was five. She was educated by Ellen Marryat, sister of the noted writer of sea adventures, Frederick Marryat. While Miss Marryat was a strict Calvinist she saw to it that Annie's education was not too narrow and included travel in Europe. Annie's marriage in 1867 to Frank Besant, who became a vicar in Lincolnshire, resulted in the birth of two children, but Annie's increasingly irreligious views led to a legal separation in 1873. The courts awarded the children to their father because of Besant's presumably unconventional views. She had become a member of the National Secular Society, which preached 'free thought' and of the Fabian Society, the noted socialist organisation whose members included George Bernard Shaw and Sidney and Beatrice Webb. The Fabian Society led in turn to the foundation of the Labour Party.

Besant, Annie Pronunciation Key Besant, Annie , English social reformer and theosophist, b. Annie Wood. She steadily grew away from Christianity and in 1873 separated from her husband, a Protestant clergyman. In 1879 the courts deprived her of her children because of her atheism and alleged unconventionality. As a member of the National Secular Society she preached free thought and, as a member of the Fabian society, socialism. With Charles Bradlaugh she edited the National Reformer and with him reprinted an old pamphlet on birth control, The Fruits of Philosophy, for which they were tried (1877) on a charge of immorality and acquitted. In 1889 she embraced theosophy Krishnamurti , whom she announced as the new Messiah. President of the Theosophical Society from 1907, she wrote an enormous number of books and pamphlets on theosophy. Her works include her autobiography (1893), Four Great Religions The Ancient Wisdom (1897), and a translation of the
