(Annie Besant) "she herself was a big spirit" Master Morya. 3 December 1937. And as for reincarnation, there are sufficient indications about it in the Gospel. They are well chosen by Annie Besant in her book Esoteric Christianity. The law of reincarnation is the foundation of all true teachings. If we reject it, the whole sense of our earthly existence will fall away of its own accord. Besides, who can explain satisfactorily all the cruel injustice of the fact that one is born handsome, rich, and happy, whereas another must drag through a pitiful life, often as a cripple, or struggle all this life against the most cruel injustices and calamities? Today, the newspapers and magazines, especially those in English, are filled with all kinds of cases from the realm of the so-called supernatural, or the other world. It is rare when a newspaper does not mention one or another remarkable case, which is substantiated by plenty of witnesses.

Annie Besant's many lives
KUMARI JAYAWARDENA But perhaps most of all we remember the charismatic Annie Besant (1847-1933), who, as her biographers have noted, led many lives. Up to the age of 44, she was in turn a clergyman's wife, atheist campaigner, socialist propagandist, trade union agitator, birth control promoter, critic of capitalism and colonialism and a fighter for women's rights. To socialists and feminists she had two lives: the years up to 1891, which they consider the more important, and her "Indian phase" from 1893 to her death in 1933, which was more problematic. The British Fabian socialist, Sidney Webb, called Annie Besant "one of the 19th century's most remarkable women"; to Bernard Shaw she was "the greatest woman public speaker"; and the Indian political activist Kamladevi Chattopadhyay referred to her as "one of the most outstanding world figures of her time." In 1890 Besant became absorbed with Theosophy and succeeded Helena Blavatsky as the leader of the Theosophists. It was one of the strangest about-turns in modern history. The secretary of the Fabian Society was appalled; he cut out her name from the list of members with the comment "Gone to Theosophy".

A Classic of Theosophical Thinking Besant, together with Blavatsky, brought into being the Theosophical Society and made it an extraordinary influence in Europe, the US and India. One doesn't have to be anything like a Theosophist to appreciate what Besant is attempting here and what she ably pulls off. Contemporary Theosophists may think this book is far too elementary, but the fact is that most people interested in New Age thinking and the occult or estoreric or mystical "teachings of the ages" don't know much, if anything, about Theosophy...so this is a pretty good place to start. A Seven-Dimensional Universe Bhagavad Gita Published in Hardcover by Quest Books (IL) (September, 1986) Authors: Annie Bessant and Annie Wood Besant Amazon base price: Average review score: This edition is not recommended The narration of this version is over-acted, lacking the quiet contemplative atmosphere fitting a text of this magnatude and importance. The speaker seems to be more of a "new-ager" type than a spiritual seeker. The narration tends to distract from the message of the text. The translation is a bit over the top as well, being done in an old time King James-ish style with lots of thy's and and thou's thrown in to perhaps make it seem more legitimate to western ears for the time that it was translated (1940's or 50's?). Download the out of print version with Jacob Needleman as the narrator from audible.com. It's truer to the message of this holy book

Catt, Carrie Chapman (1859-1947) Carrie Catt was an American leader in the campaign for woman suffrage. She served as president of the National American Woman Suffrage Association from 1900 to 1904, and from 1915 to 1920, when Amendment 19 to the United States Constitution was passed, giving women the right to vote. Catt began her suffrage work as an organizer of clubs in 1887. She became one of the suffrage movement's most effective lecturers and organizers. Her work extended to Canada and Europe. From 1904 to 1923, she served as president of the International Woman Suffrage Alliance. In 1920, Catt founded the National League of Women Voters (now called the League of Women Voters) to teach women an understanding of public affairs so they could vote intelligently. In 1925, she founded the National Committee on the Cause and Cure of War. This became the Women's Action Committee for Victory and a Lasting Peace. Carrie Clinton Lane was born in Ripon, Wis., and attended Iowa State College. She taught school and became the first woman superintendent of schools in Mason City, Iowa.

Of strong mind, yet susceptibility
Of high degree from early years made her
The willing victim of her character;
Which dulled her faith in Christianity
And attitude toward society
Determined, and though free, the prisoner
Of such created characters as were
Entangled in their web of destiny.
Far greater, doubtless, as a writer than
A woman, nonetheless her friendly tie
With Lewes let her know where genius lay
And novels write humanitarian,
With social themes and problems that still cry
For cleansing, yet were novel in her day.

Contemporary critics sometimes show
Dislike for men and things Victorian;
And strangely so, for writers greater than
We have today still wrote, touched with the glow
Of those traditions that from genius flow;
And for a great humanitarian
Who fathered fiction proletarian,
Though to him we do not this evil owe.
Victoria's was expansion's greatest age;
Democracy sired strangely an empire;
