English social reformer and theosophist. She married Frank Besant, an Anglican clergyman, in 1867 but separated from him five years later because of doctrinal differences. She joined the National Secular Society and with the atheist journalist Charles Bradlaugh crusaded for free thought, birth control, and women's rights. Besant was also a member of the socialistic Fabian Society. A few years after her conversion (1889) to Theosophy She also traveled extensively in Great Britain and the United States with Krishnamurti, her adopted son whom she presented as a new messiah, a claim he later renounced. Besant wrote widely on theosophy and was president of the Theosophical Society from 1907 until her death. Related software and videos Related books

ANNIE WOOD BESANT
Annie Wood was born in London to a middle-class Irish couple. After her father's death, relatives paid for her brother's education at Harrow while Annie was lucky to be admitted free to the home school of a family friend. At 19 she married a stern young vicar. Frustrated with domesticity, she tried to martyr herself in service to her husband's parishioners but quickly realized the poor needed better living and working conditions rather than handouts. Eventually her marriage foundered over her emerging progressivism. After divorcing Frank Besant, Annie supported herself and daughter by writing and lecturing for the Freethinkers, Theism and Fabian Socialism. George Bernard Shaw considered her Britain's and perhaps Europe's greatest orator. In 1877 Annie, with Charles Bradlaugh, was arrested for selling birth control pamphlets in London's slums. They were convicted, but the verdict was overturned and the trial helped to liberalize public attitudes although it cost Annie custody of her daughter. She comforted herself by earning a science degree at London University. In 1888 she led the Match Girls' Strike that opened stockholders' and ultimately Victorians' eyes to cruel, unsafe labor practices against unskilled female factory workers. But by then Annie had converted to Theosophy. She became its European and finally worldwide head. She lived most of her remaining years in India, rejoined at last by her son and daughter. After campaigning brilliantly for Home Rule, she died in Madras in 1933.

Born Annie Wood, in London, she married a Church of England clergyman named Besant in 1867, but the marriage failed. An ardent Anglo-Catholic as a girl, she moved towards atheism and became a leading figure in the National Secular Society. In 1877 she published The Gospel of Atheism and was unsuccessfully prosecuted for selling 'obscene literature' - a tract advocating birth control. She campaigned for feminist causes, led the London match girls' strike of 1888, and became a member of the executive committee of the Fabian Society. In 1889 she announced that she had abandoned atheism and had joined the Theosophical Society . She swiftly rose to the highest ranks of the Society and after the death of Madame Blavatsky in 1891 she led the majority faction in the Society. With C. W. Leadbeater , who had great influence with her, she sponsored Jiddu Krishnamurti as the new world teacher . She also played an important part in Indian nationalist politics. She died convinced that she would swiftly be reborn again. Her numerous books include her Autobiography , 1893, a translation of the Bhagavad Gita The Ancient Wisdom , 1897 (on Theosophy), Man and His Bodies , 1900 [see Subtle Body Death and After , 1901 [see Bardo Esoteric Christianity , 1905 [see Esoteric Introduction to Yoga , 1908; and, with Leadbeater

Besant, Annie Wood (1847-1933) , was a British social reformer and a leader of a philosophical movement called theosophy. She also was a prominent figure in India's struggle for independence from Britain.
Besant lectured widely on a number of social issues, including planned parenthood and labour reform. In 1888, she helped organize a strike at a London match factory, one of the first successful strikes by unskilled workers. At that time, Besant was a member of the Fabian Society, an organization of British socialists. In 1889, Besant joined the Theosophical Society, which combined the teachings of various religions, especially Hinduism and Buddhism, and studied the psychic powers of human beings. Besant served as president of the society from 1907 until her death in 1933. In 1894, Besant moved to India, where she continued her work in theosophy and began supporting Indian educational reform. In 1898, she opened the Central Hindu College (now Banaras Hindu University) at Banaras (Varanasi), India. In the early 1900's, she became involved in the independence movement and, in 1916, founded the Indian Home Rule League. From 1918 to 1920, she served as president of the Indian National Congress, the leading independence group. Annie Wood was born in London. She married Frank Besant, an English clergyman, in 1867.

Annie Besant (1847-1933) Annie Besant was born in London on 01 October 1847. Her father, William Page Wood, was half-Irish and half-English. Her mother, Emily Morris Wood, however, was of pure Irish descent, and Annie says in her own autobiography, "the Irish tongue is music to my ear and the Irish nature dear to my heart". Annie Besant came to India on 16 November 1893 to attend the Annual Convention of the Theosophical Society at Adyar in Madras. In 1898 she established the Central Hindu College at Benares which later formed the nucleus of the Benares Hindu University. After making Madras her home, Annie Besant founded a weekly newspaper Commonweal in January 1914. In June the same year she purchased the Madras Standard and renamed it New India , which, thereafter, became her chosen organ for her tempestuous propaganda for India’s freedom. She named this freedom "Home Rule" for India. In August 1917 she was made the President of the Calcutta Session of the Indian National Congress. In 1917 she started the Women’s Indian Association to which she gave her powerful support. Her health began to give way slowly and she passed away on 21 September 1933. She herself desired as her epitaph only the simple words "She tried to follow Truth".
