An Indexer's Guide to People with Similar or Identical Names
compiled by Frederick L. Brown When compiling an index, special care should be taken that individuals with similar or identical names are not erroneously treated as the same person. This can be especially likely when a computer automatically combines entries. For instance, "Watt, James, 35, 653, 654," might have some numbers referring to the inventor, others to the secretary of the interior. The following is a list of some names especially susceptible to this problem. A B C D ... W
  • Adams, John (1735-1826). U.S. president, 1797-1801.
  • Adams, John Quincy son of preceding. U.S. president, 1825-1829.

In January, 1864, Edgar Conkling, a prominent Republican activist from Cincinnati, Ohio, began circulating a Petition (image and text below) to be sent to the Congress urging that the Government should offer "prompt and liberal aid" for the construction of the Northern Pacific and the Central Pacific Railroads in order "to give value and salability" to the Government owned mineral lands in the Pacific states. In a pamphlet* he published about the same time, Conkling stated the results that he hoped would be achieved by the adoption of this policy by the Congress to be as follows:

Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858)
He served in the War of 1812 as a colonel under General Andrew Jackson, an early friend of his. They soon after had a falling out, facing off with guns and daggers in a barroom brawl in which Jackson was seriously wounded. Benton moved to St. Louis in 1815, became a newspaper editor, and upon Missouri's statehood in 1820 he was elected as one of its first U.S. Senators, serving for 30 years. He came to be recognized as a great orator and Senate leader . Benton's anti-slavery views cost him his Senate seat in 1850. Walter Q. Gresham (1832-1895)
He was admitted to the Indiana bar in 1854 and elected to the State Legislature in 1860. As the Civil War broke out, Gresham recruited his own military company, and rose in rank to Brigadier General. A gunshot wound in battle in Georgia ended his military career. He returned to practice law in Indiana, and ran unsuccessfully for both the U.S. House and Senate. He was appointed Postmaster General in 1883 by President Arthur. Gresham later served as Secretary of the Treasury, U.S. Circuit Judge, and Secretary of State.

1837 - Supreme Court ruled that a charter granted by a state to a company cannot work to the disadvantage of the public. The Charles River Bridge Company protested when the Warren Bridge Company was authorized in 1828 to build a free bridge where it had been chartered to operate a toll bridge in 1785. The court ruled that the Charles River Company was not granted a monopoly right in their charter, and the Warren Company could build its bridge.
502. Supreme Court: Commonwealth v. Hunt
1842 - Case heard by the Massachusetts supreme court. The case was the first judgement in the U.S. that recognized that the conspiracy law is inapplicable to unions and that strikes for a closed shop are legal. Also decided that unions are not responsible for the illegal acts of their members.
503. Great American Desert
Region between the Missouri River and the Rocky Mountains. Vast domain became accessible to Americans wishing to settle there. This region was called the "Great American Desert" in atlases published between 1820 and 1850, and many people were convinced this land was a Sahara habitable only to Indians. The phrase had been coined by Major Long during his exploration of the middle of the Louisiana Purchase region.
