Thomas Hart Benton: A Featured Biography Thomas H. Benton (MO) As a hotheaded youth on the frontier Thomas Hart Benton (1782-1858) once fought a duel with Andrew Jackson, who carried Benton's bullet in his body for the rest of his life. Neither man could have anticipated that after Jackson was elected president, Benton as a Missouri Democrat would become his strongest supporter in the Senate. (Some years later, a still hotheaded Benton barely avoided being shot in the Senate chamber .) In 1834, the Whig majority in the Senate censured President Jackson for refusing to turn over government documents relating to the Bank of the United States. Benton opposed the censure. In 1837, just before the end of Jackson's presidency and after Democrats returned to the majority in the Senate, Benton engineered a vote to expunge the censure resolution from the Senate Journal a gesture of friendship for a former foe. Thomas Hart Benton, Senator (1782-1858)- When Missouri entered the Union as a state in 1821, Benton became its first Senator, serving in that capacity for thirty years. A devoted follower of Andrew Jackson. Benton’s fight for gold and silver currency won him the nickname “Old Bullion”. He was a stout defender of the Union in Congress, and a noted Congressional orator and historian. In his support of westward expansion, he was responsible for the eastern portion of the Missouri Pacific Railroad starting at St. Louis, thus making the city a nineteenth century railroad center. The most notorious of local duels in St. Louis in that era was fought between lawyers Benton and Charles Lucas in 1817, on Bloody Island in the Mississippi River. Lucas was wounded and survived the first duel but was mortally wounded during the second fight. He was also the father in law to General Fremont (“The Pathfinder” and also the commander at the time when Lyon was defeated at Wilson Creek). The Tall polished red granite memorial was erected in 1902 by the State of Missouri. (Narrative from the Bellefontaine Tour Guide)

Thomas Hart Benton was the U.S. Congress's chief advocate of western settlement for more than thirty years, beginning in 1821. He was well known for his grandiloquent oratory and explosive temper, although he surprised people with conciliatory stands regarding slavery and territorial disputes. Benton favored gaining territory through occupation rather than military conflict. His ideas presaged the Homestead Act of 1862 , which granted land to settlers after they had lived on it and improved it for a period of five years. Benton did all in his power to assist homesteaders, advocating cheap land, the development of transportation routes such as the Santa Fe and Oregon trails, and, later, stagecoach and railroad service. He strongly encouraged the development of overland transportation, both to connect isolated settlers with friends and family and to provide the "skeleton of the future railroad." As chairman of the Committee on Indian Affairs, Benton facilitated the removal of Native American tribes to clear the way for white settlement. Following in his footsteps, Benton's son-in-law, (also the first Republican presidential candidate, in 1856) extensively explored the western territories and played a major role in the conquest of California during the Mexican War.

    Thomas Hart Benton
Thomas Hart Benton was born in Hillsborough, North Carolina, and moved to Tennessee in 1809. He studied law and was later elected to the state senate. During the War of 1812 , Benton raised a contingent of volunteers and served on Andrew Jackson 's staff. Later, Benton got into a bloody fight with Jackson, prompting the former to leave Tennessee. Benton moved to Missouri and became a newspaper editor, was active in public affairs and in 1821 was elected as the state’s first Senator. He made his mark by representing popular western causes—liberal land policy, road construction and opening new territories to settlement. Benton became very conservative on monetary matters. He opposed the Second Bank of the United States and earned the nickname “Old Bullion” for his advocacy of “ hard money ” over “ soft money .” Benton was a foe of land speculators, preferring that purchasers of western lands be actual settlers. He strove to gain Congressional support for his programs of preemption and graduation. Benton was in general a supporter of Andrew Jackson (the two were reconciled) and an opponent of John C. Calhoun
