W hat's a clerihew? It's a bit of rhyming doggerel invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956). In its traditional form, it's a four-line verse made up of two rhyming couplets, and its purpose is to offer a satiric or ridiculous biography of a famous person. Here are three of Bentley's own clerihews: Sir Humphrey Davy

If anyone calls,
Say I'm designing St. Paul's." You may have noticed that the meter in these examples is irregular. It's *supposed* to be, see, for comic effectwhich is good news for all us metrical klutzes! In a clerihew, all notions of scansion are gleefully torpedoed! Now, we want you to submit an original clerihew in the traditional style, but we want you to concentrate on a more up-to-date celebrity. Let's limit our subjects to people who've been in the news from, say, 1975 to the present. We won't be too strict about this. But we'd like these clerihews to be topical. For example: Tom Hanks
Has accounts in fifty banks.

Y es, it's clerihew time again at The Atlantic Monthly and this year we're going Hollywood! But first, a refresher course:
The clerihew is a bit of rhyming doggerel invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956). Traditionally, it's a four-line verse made up of two rhyming couplets, with meter intentionally (often ridiculously) irregular. Its purpose is to offer a satiric or absurd biography of a famous person. Here are three of Bentley's own concoctions:
Sir Humphrey Davy
Detested gravy.
He lived in the odium
Of having discovered sodium.
George the Third
Ought never to have occurred.
One can only wonder
At so grotesque a blunder. Sir Christopher Wren Said, "I'm going to dine with some men.

Edmund Clerihew Bentley was born in Shepherd's Bush, London. In 1887 he entered St. Paul's School where he struck up the most important and enduring aquaintanceship of his life, with G.K. Chesterton. They were members of the school's Junior Debating Club, and contributed essays and poems to the Debater, the club's journal. Bentley invented a new sort of limerick, the 'clerihew'.
After St. Paul's, Bentley went to Merton College, Oxford where he studied classics. After Oxford, he studied law but quickly abandoned it in favour of journalism. From 1911 until 1934 he worked for the Daily Telegraph. In 1902, he married Violet Boileau with whom he had two sons. His first crime novel was published in 1913 which was an immediate success. The public however had to wait for more than twenty years for his second crime novel.

A Clerihew by E. Clerihew Bentley, age 16, in science class Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956) wrote detective fiction, and at the age of 16, I imagine a bit bored in school, developed the verse form named after him - the clerihew. G. K. Chesterton, Bentley's friend from childhood, helps popularize the form. Bentley collected Clerihews into his 1905 Biography For Beginners, (illustrated by Chesterton) in which he explained the concept of the book with a Clerihew variant: The Art of Biography
Is different from Geography.
Geography is about Maps,
But Biography is about Chaps.
Following this publication, CLERIHEW became a recognized form of verse. Because it uses a proper name at the end of the first line (or sometimes second), it is pseudo-biographical, usually with the emphasis on the "pseudo. " Michael Curl offers this Clerihew on the form's inventor: E. C. Bentley

Clerihew
The clerihew consists of two rhyming couplets which purport to sum up the life and works of a famous person. Exaggeration, wilful misunderstanding, and even complete fabrication or character assassination, are permitted, and perhaps encouraged. The first line is always the person's name. Try these: Alfred Sisley Painted when it was drizzly. He suffered critics' strictures For the streaks on his pictures. Beatrix Potter Was certainly not a Girl of orthodox habits. Her tastes ran to rabbits. The clerihew was invented by E C Bentley (1875-1956), an English journalist and novelist whose initials stood for "Edmund Clerihew". He also wrote a ground-breaking detective novel called Trent's Last Case. Ogden Nash wrote a lot of delightful animal poems in a form very like the clerihew, though he usually had more in the first line than just the name of the species. It's tempting to sneak in a few of Mr Nash's gems, but in keeping with the policy of the site, here are a couple of my own efforts: The Rorqual The rorqual Swims without a snorkel. Though it fishes with skill It can only catch krill.

Clerihews Clerihews are short funny poems invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley (1875-1956). They have four lines, which do not have to be of the same length. The first two lines have to rhyme — so do the last two (AABB). The first line has to contain the name of a person. Bentley is said to have designed the form during a boring chemistry lesson.
