The following is a Gaslight etext.... A message to you about "Sheridan Le Fanu" BY E.F. B ENSON
from The Spectator , Vol. 146 (1931-feb-21, pp. 263-64) T HE writer of ghost stories and of tales which are designed to make the flesh creep embarks on hazardous voyages. If he does not scare his readers or inspire in them those precious uncomfortable impulses that cause them to glance hastily round in order to make sure that the creaking board or the wail of the wind did not betoken some dreadful presence even now making itself manifest to their horrified eyes, he has failed more ruinously than can any other class of narrator. The writer of humorous stories, though he may not amuse, may still interest his readers, the writer of serious psychological stuff may, though unwittingly, amuse; but no such adventitious good fortune can befall the author whose sole aim is to terrify. If he does not do that, he is naught, he falls completely flat, and no interest in side issues, whether intentional or not, will put him on his feet again. He must be all artist of no common sort, for the fearful lies but a hairbreadth away from the grotesque and the ludicrous, and his phantoms will terrify none unless they are surrounded by the phantasmal atmosphere in which alone they can live and breathe. Of all atmospheres, that is the most difficult to produce: it is easier to amuse, it is even easier to edify than, by suggestion, to alarm. Sometimes a novelist whose

from Six common things I T seems that I am not going to remain in this vast cold world for very long; that is good news to me. And because you have followed me so far already, because you have looked with me at sadness, because you have faced death with me, and because I have made you all sharers in my sorrows and in my happinesses, it is fitting that I should say good-bye to you, as you will have very few words more from me, and that I should tell you why I have to say good-bye, and with what feelings I do so. And now twenty-four hours have passed, and I have grown used to the thought. I am no longer lonely, for a kindly presence has come to me, whom they call Death. Let me tell you quite shortly what I have thought about in the last twenty-four hours, and that will be all. May I treat you all quite intimately? May I say things to you that I would sayonly to those I trusted and loved? Surely, for if you have read these little things which I have told you, these six common things as I have called them, you know me well. In this last half hour perhaps I have gained a friend, or if not that, I have treated you as if you were my friends, and I cannot go back now. But if you have laughed at them, if you have sneered, if you have thought that these stories are foolish, stupid, mock-heroic, you may still read on; but I am not talking to you. I have given you my heart, I could give you no more. If it is worthless, toss it away. Soon I shall not care. But let us walk together a few steps towards the mouth of the valley of the shadow.

The Benson
(Formally Old Vicarage Hotel)
Relaxation, comfort and good food in the very heart of historic Rye
Benson Hotel provides comfortable, relaxing accommodation in an elegant building at the very heart of historic Rye. Situated in a quiet road just off the High Street, the hotel's central location makes it the ideal base - whether you plan a weekend winding down, or an active outdoor break on Kent's famous coast and atmospheric marshes. Benson's sumptuously-appointed bedrooms (most with four-posters) combine old-fashioned cosiness with modern comforts and conveniences. All have en-suite bathrooms, colour television, direct-dial telephones and a tea and coffee tray. The hotel was built nearly three centuries ago as a home for a wealthy wool-merchant. At the end of the 19th century it became the vicarage for St. Mary's, the delightful Norman church that stands just around the corner. Conversion to an hotel - The Old Vicarage - followed in 1976. The present owners changed the name to Benson Hotel in honour of E.F.Benson (1867-1940), mayor of Rye and celebrated writer. Benson immortalised Rye as 'Tilling', the setting for six hugely popular novels. TV dramatisations brought the book's characters, Mapp and Lucia, to an even wider audience. At the back of the hotel, the lounge and adjoining terrace offer spectacular views across the leafy garden to the River Rother and Romney marsh. Here you can have a quiet drink before you go out to dinner to one of the eighteen restaurants and pubs within easy walking distance of the hotel. Here you can while away the afternoon slumped deep in an armchair with your nose in a book.

The Benson
15 East Street, Rye, East Sussex TN31 7JY Tel: 01797 225131 Fax: 01797 225512 Set in the heart of the historic town of Rye, The Benson is a smart, three storey brick building. It started life as a home for a wealthy wool-merchant nearly three hundred years ago, before becoming a vicarage and then a hotel in 1976. Present owners, Peter and Valerie Sumner changed the name to Benson Hotel in honour of EF Benson (1867-1940), mayor of Rye and celebrated writer, whose characters included the now famous, Mapp and Lucia. The house is elegantly furnished, but its main appeal is as a base to explore the area. Mid-week walking breaks are popular, and the Sumners provide maps and book guides if required. Rye lies at the heart of Romney Marsh a haven for wildlife and a maze of walking paths. The cobbled streets and quiet winding passages of the town itself are crammed with history, including a castle, a monastery, a 12 th century church and several olde worlde inns. Once surrounded by the sea, Rye was one of the cinque ports an ancient federation of the most important towns on England's southeast coast, and apart from the lack of water nowadays, Rye has scarcely changed since. The beautiful beach of Camber Sands is close by, and the fishing port of Hastings, Canterbury and the old spa town of Tunbridge Wells are all within easy striking distance for pleasant day trips.
