Arnold Bennett
The English novelist lived in Paris from 1902 to 1912, and he was introduced to Ravel by Calvocoressi, or by the Godebskis, in 1908. He heard Ravel playing extracts from the piano score of Daphnis et Chloe in 1911, and declared that he was "much pleased" by the new score. His acquaintance with Ravel seems to have been limited to the years prior to the First World War. In his Memoirs , Bennett records, on 4 June 1910: "Ravel and his mother came for tea yesterday; only both of them preferred water." Bennett , [1932], vol.I, p.369) In December 1913, Ravel visited Bennett and his French wife in England; whatever meeting of minds there may have been, all that is recorded is that they went shopping in Ipswich. About 1900 he began to devote himself industriously to his own work, producing a series of excellent regional novels. Influenced by the naturalism of Zola, he depicted in great detail the grim, sometimes sordid, lives of shopkeepers and potters. His attitude toward his characters was one of affectionate sympathy, and he always managed to make their mundane lives interesting. Bennett's best work is contained in his novels of the "Five Towns," which include Anna of the Five Towns The Old Wives' Tale (1908), the trilogy Clayhanger Hilda Lessways (1911), and These Twain (1916). Bennett also achieved considerable success as a playwright, most notably with

Research by Malcolm Henson Arnold Bennett and Physical Deterioration from Malcolm Henson Concerns over the health of the nation, diet and levels of physical exercise are not new. In the early twentieth century the government was shocked to discover the poor state of health of many volunteers for the Boer War, of whom more than a quarter (28.1%) were rejected. These concerns led the government into setting up a committee to examine the problem. Its report on Physical Deterioration (1904) recognized the poor state of health of the nation’s schoolchildren, and argued that exercise and a proper diet were important for young people. Not only would they improve their health and wellbeing, but they would also help to maintain an active workforce and consolidate Britain ’s economic standing. Concern about the nation’s health was also of interest to Arnold Bennett (1867-1931). Bennett is famous as a novelist, playwright, essayist, critic and journalist; he was the author of almost 3,000 articles, many of them set in the Staffordshire Potteries where he was born.

Time
Time wounds all heels. = Jane Ace Nothing lies on our hands with such uneasiness as time. Wretched and thoughtless creatures! In the only place where covetousness was a virtue we turn prodigals. = Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719) English essayist The hours of a wise man are lengthened by his ideas, as those of a fool are by his passions. The time of the one is long because he does not know what to do with it; so is that of the other, because he distinguishes every moment of it with useful or amusing thoughts; or, in other words, because the one is always wishing it away, and the other always enjoying it. = Joseph Addison (1672 - 1719) English essayist What is a thousand years? Time is short for one who thinks, endless for one who yearns. = Alain Time is so fleeting that if we do not remember God in our youth, age may find us incapable of thinking about Him.

Myers Literary Guide Centre for Northern Studies ARNOLD BENNETT (1867 - 1931) The hero of The Roll Call (1918), the fourth of the fine Clayhanger tetralogy is an architect who receives a commission in what can only be Newcastle by the description below, but the city is never named and the book makes no use of Newcastle as a setting: Bennett writes of 'the sense of its huge adventurous, corporate life, continuous from century to century. It had known terrible battles, obstinate sieges, famines, cholera, a general conflagration... It had fiercely survived them all. It was a city passionate and highly vitalised.' Bennett divides the city fathers of the time into 'wire-pullers, axe-grinders, vain nincompoops, honest mediocrities, and the handful who combined honesty with sagacity, and sagacity with strength.'
