The project is assembling an electronic archive of volumes of American poetry prior to 1920. The full text of each volume of poetry is being converted into digital form and coded in Standard Generalized Mark-up Language (SGML) using the TEI Guidelines. The texts are searchable and can be viewed in HTML as well as SGML. The Humanities Text Initiative at the University of Michigan is pleased to announce the addition of 35 new texts to the American Verse Project. Works by little-known women and African-American authors not contained in other electronic text collections have been added, as have works by well-known authors such as Emily Dickinson. Swans
The Quality of Courage
A Poem by Stephen Vincent Benet
Black trees against an orange sky,
Trees that the wind shook terribly,
Like a harsh spume along the road,
Quavering up like withered arms,
Writhing like streams, like twisted charms
Of hot lead flung in snow. Below
The iron ice stung like a goad,
Slashing the torn shoes from my feet,
And all the air was bitter sleet.
And all the land was cramped with snow,
Steel-strong and fierce and glimmering wan, Like pale plains of obsidian. And yet I strove and I was fire And ice and fire and ice were one In one vast hunger of desire. A dim desire, of pleasant places, And lush fields in the summer sun, And logs aflame, and walls, and faces, And wine, and old ambrosial talk, A golden ball in fountains dancing, And unforgotten hands. (Ah, God, I trod them down where I have trod, And they remain, and they remain, Etched in unutterable pain, Loved lips and faces now apart, That once were closer than my heart In agony, in agony, And horribly a part of me. . . .

SWANS
Note from the Editor In America, we tend to jump from crisis to crisis. A submarine here, a spy plane there, Israel one day, Colombia the other, a missionary plane shot down over Peru, electrical blackouts, school shootings or Iraq bombings. In the news cycle only the stock market, the weather, the 2-minute segment on the President and the ads are a daily constant. Everything else comes and goes. So much comes and goes that we cannot even keep track of much at all. We even forget at times that it even happened and the only opinion we barely have is what we were told in the news. Some issues, however, are worth visiting and revisiting, analysing, pondering time and again. It does foster understanding but most importantly it helps to learn and act accordingly. So, this week we are bringing you four perspectives about international justice and Slobodan Milosevich (also spelled Milosevic), the former president of Yugoslavia. We hope you read them and ponder them; then, as always, please form your own opinion.

1718 items Access: Open George Marion O'Donnell is one of those figures frequently encountered in the study of literary history: a young writer of promise who never realized his full potential. Born on Silver Home Plantation near Midnight, Mississippi, O'Donnell studied at Memphis State College and received degrees from Vanderbilt University in 1936 and 1939. While at Vanderbilt, he became a disciple of the Agrarian School which was then emerging at the university under the leadership of John Crowe Ransom and Donald Davidson. O'Donnell was introduced by them to Allen Tate and maintained an active correspondence with all three of these figures who laid the foundation for the school of Southern New Criticism. During this period he also began corresponding with such figures as Ezra Pound, Basil Bunting, and Louis Zukofsky, seeking their advise and receiving strong encouragement in return. By 1940, O'Donnell had begun to build a literary reputation on the basis of a small but distinguished body of poetry, fiction, and criticism, much of which reflects his Southern roots, especially his critical pieces. But although O'Donnell was selected to be in the important New Directions anthology
