The collection consists of correspondence to and from Lovat Fraser and Grace Crawford Lovat Fraser, with letters to and from other family members, friends and business colleagues. Fraser's juvenile correspondence to and from his parents and his brother, Alan (approx. 200 pieces, c.1899-1907), contains many early sketches and gives a vivid picture of his life in boarding school. His mature correspondence with family members (approx. 250 letters), include his descriptive and often poignant letters home from the Front. Many of these are illustrated as well. Letters to Fraser and/or Crawford, including letters to Crawford after Fraser's death, include correspondence from members of the English literary, music and theatrical community of the first half of the twentieth century. Some of the correspondents are:

First American edition.
Sir (Henry) Max(imilian) Beerbohm was born in London, the son of a Lithuanian corn merchant, and half-brother of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. As a student at Charter-House School and Merton College, Oxford he developed a talent for writing and caricature. He published his first volume of essays (many of which had appeared previously in the 'Yellow Book') in 1896 with the ironic title 'The Works of Max Beerbohm'. He succeeded Bernard Shaw as the drama critic of 'The Saturday Review'. In 1910 he married an American actress, Florence Kahn (d.1951). Except during the World Wars they lived together in Rapallo, Italy. His writings and art splendidly combine gentle humor, elegance, wit and style. "I was a modest, good-humoured boy.

Max Beerbohm was educated at Charterhouse and Merton College, Oxford. He contributed to the famous Yellow Book while still an undergraduate at Oxford. In 1898 he succeeded G. B. His works include A Christmas Garland (1912), a collection of parodies on such authors as Joseph Conrad and Thomas Hardy; Zuleika Dobson (1911), a fantasy about a femme fatalle who causes the entire student body of Oxford to commit suicide; Seven Men (1919), fiction in the form of essays; And Even Now (1920), essays; and Mainly on the Air (1947), radio talks. Beerbohm was accomplished at drawing, and he published several volumes of excellent caricatures, including (1904) and Rossetti and His Circle (1922). He was knighted in 1939 on his return from Italy, where he had lived from 1910, after marrying an American actress, Florence Kahn (except for the duration of the two World Wars). His knighthood was slow in coming, probably because of his merciless caricatures of the royal family. A month before his death he married the woman who had looked after him for many years after his wife's death, Elizabeth Jungmann. We always try to locate images of the specific works discussed in the journal. As you might expect, this is often impossible. Failing that, we seek out similar or typical work by the artist. The images we have on file are linked below.
