Biographical Sketch
Max Beerbohm, considered by some to be the best essayist, parodist, and cartoonist of his age, was born Henry Maximilian Beerbohm on August 24, 1872, in London, to Julius Ewald Beerbohm and his second wife, Eliza Draper Beerbohm. His early education was at a preparatory school in Orme Square, and then at Charterhouse. He attended Merton College at Oxford 1890-1894, but did not receive a degree. While at Oxford, Beerbohm published caricatures and essays in the Strand and other periodicals. In 1893 he became acquainted with Sir William Rothenstein, who introduced him to Aubrey Beardsley and other members of the literary and artistic circle connected with the Bodley Head. Through Beerbohm's half brother, noted actor-manager Herbert Beerbohm Tree, he became acquainted with Oscar Wilde and his friends. By the time Beerbohm left Oxford, he had developed his personality as a dandy and humorist. In 1895 he traveled with Herbert Beerbohm Tree's theatrical company on a four-month tour of American cities, working as Tree's secretary. After his return to London, he moved in with his sisters and widowed mother. He contributed drawings and essays to various periodicals, including the

writer and caricaturist with Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945)
by Gillman and Company, Oxford To have oneself photographed with another man in a formal studio portrait was an accepted part of the experience of late-Victorian homosocial relations among the well-to-do. It did not necessarily indicate an erotic connectionthere was no such sexual relationship in the case of Beerbohm and Rothensteinbut it did serve to celebrate the intellectual and emotional intimacies that men were encouraged to form, especially in their youth. In fact, William Rothenstein was not Max Beerbohm's closest friend; that was Reginald Turner, his classmate at Oxford, who, like Beerbohm himself, first became part of Oscar Wilde's circle and then one of the writers affiliated with the Yellow Book Self-Caricature
by Sir William Rothenstein (1872-1945) "There was a likeness between them. As they gazed at each other each felt: Here am Iand then each felt: But how different!. . . . Broken asunder, yet made in the same mould, could it be that each completed what was dormant in the other?" Those were the words that Virginia Woolf used, in her comic biography

white chalk, charcoal on brown paper, 1889 William Rothenstein was best known as a portrait artist, specializing in images of British writers, artists, scholars, and intellectuals (and leaving it to J. S. Sargent to corner the more lucrative market in transatlantic business tycoons and their expensively over-decorated wives and daughters). We can see him here at the young age of nineteen already practicing for his future career with this sensitive, yet unglamorized, image of himselfdoughy cheeks, spectacles, and all. What this sober vision fails to suggest, however, is the great attraction Rothenstein had felt since his days as a schoolboy to caricature and cartooning. Even before his fateful meeting with Max Beerbohm, he was a fan of such late-Victorian comic artists as Linley Sambourne, John Tenniel, and especially Harry Furniss. Indeed, in his two-volume autobiography, Men and Memories: A History of the Arts, 18721922
