History of the Tower
'So I am growing rich, and mean to build towers...' - William Beckford Born to great wealth, endowed with precocious talent, displaying pride of ancestry and his family's notorious temper, William Beckford (1760-1844) was a character around whom legends grew, even in his own lifetime. Beckford's name will always be linked to Fonthill Abbey; the great neo-Gothic house designed by James Wyatt, and built on Beckford's Wiltshire estate. Less well known is Lansdown Tower, or 'Beckford's Tower' as it is more affectionately known as today. After selling Fonthill Abbey in 1822 Beckford moved to Bath, where he continued to indulge his taste for building, landscape gardening, collecting and creating magical interiors. For the last 22 years of his life he pursued these interests with his usual passion and impetuousness, assisted by the young Bath architect Henry Edmund Goodridge. Beckford purchased the land behind his home in Lansdown Crescent to create a mile long ride through a series of gardens and landscaped features to the summit of Lansdown Hill, where he built a 120-foot high neo-classical tower, crowned with an octagonal lantern decorated with gilt gold columns. The two main rooms at the base of the Tower, the Scarlet and Crimson Drawing Rooms, had rich carpets, luxurious curtains, and coffered ceilings panelled in oak and enriched with scarlet, crimson, purple and gold. The spiral staircase with its 154 steps leading up to the Belvedere was carpeted and at the centre of the stairwell stood a colossal vase of polish granite.

Beckford's Tower
Beckford's Tower was designed by Henry Edmund Goodridge in 1825 and completed in 1827 for William Beckford (1760-1844), one of the nation's most accomplished and interesting characters. The 120-foot neo-classical Tower, which enjoys uninterrupted views of the countryside, was constructed as a study retreat and to house Beckford's precious collection of art and rare books. The surrounding Victorian Cemetery, containing William Beckford's tomb, was in his lifetime part of a beautiful pleasure garden known as 'Beckford's Ride', which ran from his house in Lansdown Crescent up to the Tower at the top of Lansdown Hill. The Tower is now home to a museum collection displaying furniture originally made for the Tower, alongside paintings, prints and objects illustrating William Beckford's life as a writer, collector and patron of the arts. Visitors can follow in Beckford's footsteps and climb the spiral staircase to the beautifully restored Belvedere and experience the spectacular panoramic view of Bath.

William Beckford, , English novelist and eccentric. Beckford is now best known for his Gothic-influenced oriental tale The History of the Caliph Vathek Vathek , originally published in French, tells the story of the deranged eponymous caliph's vicious life and final descent into hell. In his own day, though, his fame depended at least as much upon his unconventional life. He had scandalous romantic liaisons with a young boy and with the wife of his cousin, and was known to participate in black magic. In he built Fonthill Abbey, a pseudo-Gothic structure similar in spirit to Walpole 's Strawberry Hill.

impression that the Beckford Round Table is a closed shop. I hasten to
correct that impression with this call for papers.
The last three international congresses have brought together
scholars and enthusiasts of a range of interests and nations to share
ideas on William Thomas Beckford of Fonthill (1760-1844), a figure whose
own activities include music, politics, writing, landscaping, collecting, travelling, and building. Vathek and Other Stories:
A William Beckford Reader
Edited by Malcolm Jack Beckford's Gothic novel Vathek , an Arabian tale, was originally written in French when the author was twenty-one. Published in English in 1786, it was one of the most successful of the oriental tales then in fashion. William Beckford (1760-1844) inherited a large fortune and, at the age of nineteen, went on a tour of Holland, Germany, Belgium, France and Italy. He was a Member of Parliament and a traveller who spent large sums of money collecting rare books, curiosities and paintings for the embellishment of his Gothic Extravaganza, Fonthill Abbey, where he lived in opulent seclusion until forced by bankruptcy to sell it in 1822. This edition makes available to a new generation of scholars and general readers, the originality of Beckford's ideas, and the excellence of his prose.

Local Exhibition: William Beckford 1760-1844: An Eye for the Magnificent - until 14 April 2002 William Beckford (1760 - 1844) was an eighteenth century millionaire, travel writer, novelist, visionary and builder of towers. He is one of the greatest names in the history of collecting.
In 1822, his decision to sell the contents of Fonthill Abbey, caused a feeding frenzy. Fonthill Abbey revealed Beckford as a leading advocate of Gothic architecture, design and history, but his taste was broader than that - he had a passion for the Medieval period that stretched to include Oriental, Islamic and Renaissance work. Beckford ignited the enthusiasm and taste of a generation of architects and designers.
He inherited his family's Jamaican sugar plantations, and was known as "England's wealthiest son". He completed a Grand Tour of unparalleled lavishness and became a figure of international repute as a young man, not least as the author of the sensational novel Vathek, which he wrote at 21, signalling the arrival of a person of truly exotic character and taste.

Elegiac Sonnet to a Mopstick
Straight remnant of the spiry birchen bough,
That over the streamlet wont perchance to quake
Thy many twinkling leaves and, bending low,
Beheld thy white rind dancing on the lake
How doth thy present state, poor stick! awake
My pathosfor, alas! even stripped as thou
May be my beating breast, if ever forsake
Philisto this poor heart; and break his vow.
So musing on, I fare with many a sigh
And meditating then on times long past,
To thee, lorn pole! I look with tearful eye,
As all beside the floor-soiled pail thou art cast;
And my sad thoughts, while I behold thee twirled,
Turn on the twistings of this troublous world.

A small bronze sculpture of Venuz by the Florentine Antonio Susini (active 1580-1625) encapsulates the quality and mystery of the collection to which it has belonged for over a hundred years (Fig. 1). (1) This Venus, which is notable for the exquisite quality of its design and workmanship, is the work of one of the most renowned assistants of Giambologna (1529-1608). It has a distinguished provenance front the collection of Louis XIV, and yet possesses a modesty both in its configuration and in its size. The same characteristics can be recognised in the collection to which it belongs, that of the Holburne Museum of Art in Bath. [FIGURE 1 OMITTED] Since 1916, the Museum has occupied a fine late eighteenth-century building, the former Sydney Hotel, in the picturesque setting of England's only surviving eighteenth-century public pleasure gardens. It bas long been recognised as one of Britain's most delightful small independent museums (Fig. 4). (2) The Museum's collection is still essentially that or its founder, Sir William Holburne (1793-1874), and current re-appraisal is re-establishing his significance as a highly individual Victorian collector of fine and decorative art (Fig. 2). Beckford cabinet
One of a pair of magnificent cabinets made for William Beckford (1760-1844) Special loan: the loan of this exhibit has been made possible with the generous assisitance of Mrs Edmond J. Safra. William Beckford, the creator of the Gothick Fonthill Abbey and a most discriminating connoisseur, had this gorgeous cabinet made in Paris around 1825. It is richly encrusted with hardstones and luxuriously mounted in gilt bronze and incorporates panels of hardstones made at the celebrated Gobelins workshops in Paris in the late 17th Century. The cabinet embodies the opulent French style - colourful and intensely decorative - that was made fashionable by patrons such as the Prince Regent. The loan of the Beckford cabinet gives visitors to the Gilbert Collection a rare opportunity to see one of the most sumptuous pieces ever commissioned by a British patron in Paris and to compare it with the opulent clock cabinet, also decorated with hardstone panels, commissioned by Beckford's son-in-law, the Duke of Hamilton, and with other material ordered by Beckford now in the Gilbert Collection. current Director's choice - Storr Basket previous choice - Suki Chalice previous choice - Torah Crown previous choice - Beckford Cabinet ... home the galleries director's choice

A superb 15th century silver gilt and enamel chalice, from the exhibition 'A Celebration of Hungarian Gold and Silver' The basket is in the form of plaited ears of wheat. The pierced. rim foot is chased with trellised basketwork with plaiting above and below. The spreading sides are formed as forty groups of three ears of wheat plaited together, the curling ears forming the border. A band of reed-and-tie ornament is applied around the lower part of the basket. The underside of the plain base is engraved with a crest. The crest is that of Beckford, for William Beckford (1760-1844). He is best known for Fonthill Abbey, a vast "Gothick" man-sion that he built in Wiltshire during the first decade of the nineteenth century and whose spire was taller than that of Salisbury Cathedral. He devoted himself to filling the house with works of art until 1822, when the failure of his West Indian sugar plantations forced him to sell the house and most of its contents to John Farquhar. Farquhar himself sold the contents in the following year in one of the most famous auctions of the nineteenth century. Beckford's taste for exquisite workmanship and sumptuous materials was largely out of tune with the times: William Hazlitt acidly described the house as "a Cathedral turned into a toy shop, an immense Museum of all that is most curious and costly and, at the same time, most worthless in the productions of art and nature"
