BECKE, George Lewis ('Louis')
In 1957 James Michener and A. Grove Day devised a series of questions to identify those who really knew the Pacific. The only useful question to ask, so they felt, was to name "best writer about the Pacific," as there was only one 'correct' answer: Louis Becke. George Lewis ('Louis') Becke was born on 18 June 1855 in Port Macquarie on the New South Wales North Coast, where his father, Frederick Becke, was clerk of Petty Sessions. Becke received little formal education before 1867 when the Becke's moved to Sydney and where he attended the Fort Street Model School. At the age of fourteen he accompanied his brother Vernon to San Francisco on a trip lasting nineteen months, returning in July 1871. At sixteen he stowed away on the barque Rotumah bound for Samoa where he took a job as book keeper in the store of Macfarlane and Williams. While in Apia, Becke met notorious blackbirder, buccaneer, swindler and general hell-raiser "Bully" Hayes. In late 1873 Becke was asked by his employers to sail the ketch E.A. Williams

Site Map Louis (George Lewis) BECKE (1855-1913) By Reef and Palm This collection of short stories established Becke's literary reputation. In all he published over 30 books including short stories, novels, biography and reminiscences. In the introduction to the book (included in the etext) the Earl of Pembroke wrote of Becke, "born at Port Macquarrie in Australia, where his father was clerk of petty sessions, he was seized at the age of fourteen with an intense longing to go to sea." Pembroke went on to say that "every one who has a taste for good stories will feel, I believe, the force of these. Every one who knows the South Seas, and, I believe, many who do not, will feel that they have the unmistakable stamp of truth." The introduction provides a brief biography of Becke's life and an outline of the stories.

KIRIBATI , (pronounced like kee-ree-bus , the native pronunciation of Gilberts ) is a small island republic in the middle of the Pacific, with a population of about 70,000 Micronesians. Formerly part of the British Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony, Kiribati became independent in 1979, while I was there on leave for a year from my graduate studies at the University of Hawaii, doing linguistic research for the Kiribati Peace Corps Language Handbook
