1999 "Literary Companion" Calendars Published
In his introduction to the calendars, Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole describes the Library's book and nonbook collections as "an amazing compendium of the power and influence of the written word." He also notes how the Library strives to make all of its collections readily available, not only to those able to visit Washington but also through its National Digital Library Program "to the growing millions of people with access to personal computers." American novelist Rex Beach (1877-1949), one of the most popular American novelists in the first decades of this century, is on the cover of the 1999 engagement calendar (above righ), which was compiled by Margaret E. Wagner of the Library's Publishing Office. She and free-lance writer Alan Bisbort wrote the captions. The 112-page spiral-bound book sells for $13.95. Both calendars are available in bookstores around the country, in the Library of Congress Sales Shop, and from Pomegranate Calendars and Books, Box 6099, Rohnert Park, CA 94927.

Library of Congress 1999 "Literary Companion" Calendars Published
In his introduction to the calendars, Center for the Book Director John Y. Cole emphasizes how the Library strives to make all of its collections readily available to those outside Washington. Publications such as literary calendars and resource guides help it share the knowledge it preserves, he notes, but so do exhibitions, public readings, and the Library's home page on the World Wide Web. Popular American novelist Rex Beach (1877-1949) is featured on the cover of the 1999 engagement calendar, which was compiled by Margaret E. Wagner of the Library's Publishing Office. She and free-lance writer Alan Bisbort wrote the captions. The 112-page spiral bound book sells for $13.95. Walt Whitman is on the cover of the 1999 wall calendar, which was compiled by Ms. Wagner and Mr. Bisbort, who also wrote the brief biographical essays about each author. In addition to Whitman, the writers portrayed are: John le Carre, Fyodor Dostoyevsky, Dame Agatha Christie, Lewis Carroll, George Gordon, Lord Byron; Lorraine Hansberry, Clifford Odets, Gore Vidal, Nikki Giovanni, Maxwell Bodenheim, and James Baldwin. The price is $12.95.

Rex Ellingwood Beach Born: September 1, 1877
    Place: Atwood, Michigan
    Died: December 7, 1949
Place: Sebring, Florida R ex Beach was well on his way to becoming a lawyer. He was born in Atwood, Michigan in 1877, went to school, studied, and set his sights on the field of law. He attended Rollins College, Chicago College of Law, and Kent College of Law. Not a bad path for a lawyer-to-be. B ut then... something happened that changed the course of his life forever. Gold was discovered in the Klondike, and Beach was clobbered with Gold Rush Fever. He left school to become part of the Gold Rush, and set out for the Klondike to strike it rich. He searched the North Country for five years, but never found the gold he was looking for. Instead, his travels stirred up his imagination, and he began to write. H e quickly became a popular author, writing tales of adventure, set in the wilds of Alaska. He wrote of huge, untamed, wild lands filled with risk and danger. He championed the courage and bravery of those who lived and died on the Alaskan frontier. His sold his stories to magazines and periodicals, and people ate up his tales. His writing spanned 40 years, and in that time he published numerous articles, short stories, and more than 30 novels. H is stories were immensely popular with a public that was fascinated with the rough-and-tough sagas of the Gold Rush, and several of his works became bestsellers in the early 1900's. His novel

Many men were in debt to the trader at Flambeau and many counted him as a friend.
    The Barrier Books (First Lines)
The train from Palermo was late. Already long, shadowy fingers were reaching down the valleys across which the railroad track meandered. Far to the left, out of an opalescent sea, rose the fairy-like Lipari Islands, and in the farthest distance Stromboli lifted its smoking cone above the horizon. On the landward side of the train, as it reeled and squealed along its tortuous course, were gray and gold Sicilian villages perched high against the hills or drowsing among fields of artichoke and sumac and prickly pear.
The Net (ch. I) [ Books (First Lines)
The trail to Kalvik leads down from the northward mountains over the tundra which flanks the tide flats, then creeps out upon the salt ice of the river and across to the village. It boasts no travel in summer, but by winter an occasional toil-worn traveller may be seen issuing forth from the Great Country beyond, bound for the open water; while once in thirty days the mail-team whirls out of the forest to the south, pauses one night to leave word of the world, and then is swallowed up in the silent hills. Kalvik, to be sure, is not much of a place, being hidden away from the main-travelled routes to the interior and wholly unknown except to those interested in the fisheries.
