L(yman) Frank Baum, born in Chittenango, New York, in 1856, tried his hand at various professions, including that of newspaper editor, crockery salesman, axle-grease manufacturer, and chicken farmer, until, at the age of forty, he discovered his true talent - the writing of fantastic tales. His most famous work, "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz", was published in 1900 and was followed by thirteen more full-length Oz novels, six short "Little Wizard Stories," and numerous other fantasies and pseudonymous books. In 1910, he moved to Hollywood with his wife and four sons. There they built "Ozcot," the home in which Baum lived until his death in 1919. Mother Goose in Prose . Although the book failed financially, it was well-enough received that more books would follow, until he became a very famous writer of fantasy. To slow the pace as he grew older and more successful, he moved to Hollywood, which became a hub of filmmaking several years later, and he would go on to write a number of films and direct two, although without success. By this time he had become something of a celebrity as a writer, and was able to act again with an amateur group called The Uplifters. After much health difficulty, during which he stopped writing only at its most severe, he died of a stroke in 1919. Frank Baum (Lyman Frank Baum)[bOm] Pronunciation Key Mother Goose in Prose (1897), was followed by Father Goose: His Book (1899), which was an immediate bestseller. In 1900 he published his most famous work, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, a story about a little girl carried by a tornado to the magical land of Oz. Baum's dramatization of the book was produced in 1902; the story was also made into an extraordinarily popular motion picture in 1938. Although he wrote more than 70 children's books, Baum's fame rests largely on The Wizard and his 13 other stories of Oz, including Ozma of Oz (1907) and The Scarecrow of Oz (1915), all of which emphasize such American virtues as practicality, self-reliance, tolerance, and egalitarianism. Researching the topic. Application 2 asked you to:
IMAGINE that you could interview anyone you wanted to, real or fictional, living or not, about any topic.
      • WHOM would you want to interview? Write down a few names. I chose to interview the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good Sorceress of Oz.
      • WHAT topic(s) would you want to cover in the interview? What would you need to know before the interview? What information would help you prepare the questions you'd ask? The main topic I'm interested in is women in Oz. Before the interview, I would need to know about:
        • Oz, the land they live in.
        • What a witch is and does.
        • What a sorceress is and does.
      • WHERE would you find that information? How would you begin?
      • Oz: I know that L. Frank Baum wrote extensively about this place, so my first stop would be a library catalog, such as . There I would type in "Baum, L Frank" for "author" in "Search the Library Catalog" on the library's main page. I found several listings for L. Frank Baum, including one for his first Oz book, The Wizard of Oz.

    The Wonderful Wizard of Oz
    • Folklore, legends, myths and fairy tales have followed childhood through the ages, for every healthy youngster has a wholesome and instinctive love for stories fantastic, marvelous and manifestly unreal.
      • Introduction Dorothy lived in the midst of the great Kansas prairies, with Uncle Henry, who was a farmer, and Aunt Em, who was the farmer's wife. It was Toto that made Dorothy laugh, and saved her from growing as gray as her other surroundings. Toto was not gray; he was a little black dog, with long silky hair and small black eyes that twinkled merrily on either side of his funny, wee nose. "You are welcome, most noble Sorceress, to the land of the Munchkins. We are so grateful to you for having killed the Wicked Witch of the East, and for setting our people free from bondage." Dorothy looked, and gave a little cry of fright. There, indeed, just under the corner of the great beam the house rested on, two feet were sticking out, shod in silver shoes with pointed toes. There were only four witches in all the Land of Oz, and two of them, those who live in the North and the South, are good witches. I know this is true, for I am one of them myself, and cannot be mistaken. Those who dwelt in the East and the West were, indeed, wicked witches; but now that you have killed one of them, there is but one Wicked Witch in all the Land of Ozthe one who lives in the West.
