The Wizard of Oz L. Frank Baum The Wizard of Oz is a great book for all ages. It's a mix of comedy, fright, and happiness all in one book. Dorothy and her dog, Toto, get lost after the tornado. They encounter strange things like witches and munchkins. Then, they come upon a strange man called Oz. Believe it or not, the town of Oz is colored green!!! I can't tell you anymore or I'll spoil the book. You wouldn't want us to spoil it, would you? Artifact Courtesy of SIU-C Museum

L. Frank Baum's first attempts at finding a publisher for The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900) were fruitless: The market for British fairy tales was considerably stronger at the time, and the fantasy land he had created with its roots in the American Midwest was a hard sell. This rejection occurred even after Baum and his illustrator, W.W. Denslow, had produced the best-selling children's book of 1899, a collection of humorous verse entitled Father Goose, His Book. Eventually Baum did find a publisher, and The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was an immediate success, spawning a stage play in 1902, 13 sequels between 1900 and his death in 1919, a series of Sunday comic pages, a young readers' series of Oz books and, of course, the classic film of 1939. Success of this magnitude was without precedent in Baum's life: During his adult life, he had relocated from New York to South Dakota to Chicago, working in and starting a number of businesses, each of which fizzled. But with The Wonderful Wizard of Oz he hit upon a winning formula: A child hero leaves home through some accident and finds herself in a fantasy land, where she is guided by a wise parent-surrogate. This formula is not wholly dissimilar from that of the adventure story for boys that was so popular at the turn of the century, so it is perhaps not surprising that in addition to the Oz industry Baum fathered, he also wrote more than 30 adventure stories between 1906 and 1919. Under the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne, Baum wrote the

They represent one of the earliest uses of pictures in instructional books for students, starting in the sixteenth century with the hornbooks or wooden paddles with inscribed alphabets, numerals, and prayers. Out of this tradition came the battledore, a folded piece of cardboard with an illustrated alphabet. By the time L. Frank Baum published this alphabet book, printing technology had developed to the point at which children expected their books to be in bold and irresistible color. Baum's career as a children's author began when his family encouraged him to compile the nursery rhymes he told his sons. His first book, Mother Goose in Prose , sold well, and he followed with Father Goose: His Book , which became the best-selling children's title of 1899. In 1900 he had two books published. The Army Alphabet , an oversized picture book, taught the alphabet with illustrations from the Spanish-American War era. The second book

  • A Bio-bibliographical note about L. Frank Baum
"Lyman Frank Baum was born on 15 May, 1856 in Chittenango, New York. He spent his childhood living on a luxurious country estate called 'Rose Lawn', his father having made a fortune in the oil fields of Pennsylvania. "He married Maud Gage in 1882, the daughter of a leading suffragette, and the family moved westwards to South Dakota. He worked in the theatre and in newspapers and magazines, he manufactured a patent axle grease called Baum's Castorine, managed a general store called Baum's Bazaar, and was even a poultry farmer. "His first two books retold traditional stories, although the last story in Mother Goose in Prose (1897) introduced the character of a young girl named Dorothy. This led him towards the creation of the land of mystery and delight called Oz, and thus, in 1900, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was born. It was an overnight success, and within two years a stage musical of the book had been produced, with Baum himself writing the lyrics and so fulfilling an earlier ambition to be a playwright. However he was forever identified with Oz by the public and as a result he wrote a further thirteen volumes about this mystical land, including

~ Harold Arlen/ E.Y. Harburg Writer Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) was born on this day in Chittenango, New York . In twenty years he wrote over 70 books and is best known for his famous novel, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). The book gave birth to a series of novels and the unforgettable 1939 MGM film classic. Inspired by the writing of Charles Dickens , Baum was a natural storyteller. His oral tales would draw neighborhood children to his house before bedtime to hear his latest imaginary installment. To please a child ," he said, "is a sweet and lovely thing that warms one's heart and brings its own reward." Through his memorable and beloved Oz characters, Dorothy Gale, her dog, Toto, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Woodman, and the Scarecrow, Baum wrote about love courage , and intelligence. And that there is "no place like home Judy Garland was 17 when she played the 11 year old Dorothy. Her portrayal of Baum's heroine left an indelible tattoo in our hearts , that the dreams you dare to dream really do come true somewhere over the rainbow.

    L. Frank Baum Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) Born in Chittenango, New York, Lyman Frank Baum used his middle name throughout his lifetime. A constitutionally delicate child, Frank indulged in less strenuous activities such as reading and concocting his own fairy tales. He grew up with all the advantages wealth brings his father was successful in the oil business and the Baum's lived on an estate near Chittenango. While still a teen, Frank's father bought him a printing press and he began publishing his own newspaper called The Rose Lawn Home Journal. The newspaper sold well at local stores, and Frank was even able to sell advertising. Baum's early interest in Journalism would later serve him well when the family business failed. While working as a newspaperman from 1880 to 1902, Frank began to pen a series of novels, which would become his legacy. His most famous work, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz that now famous story about a Kansas girl swept away in a tornado to the magical land of Oz was dramatized in 1902. Nearly everyone alive in America has seen the extraordinarily popular motion picture made in 1938. Baum published 13 other stories of Oz, which were wildly popular in the first few decades of the 1900s. Baum's weak constitution plagued him throughout his life, and at the age of 63, Frank lapsed into unconsciousness and died. His wife Maud and two sons survived him. Notify me when new books by L.
