L. Frank Baum and the Land of Oz
I n an inscription in an earlier children's book that he gave his sister, L. Frank Baum (1856-1919) noted : " I have learned to regard fame as a will-o-the-wisp, which when caught, is not worth the possession; but to please a child is a sweet and lovely thing that warms one's heart and brings its own reward." With The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, Baum won the fame that had eluded him in his early careers. By the time he died in 1919, Baum had written thirteen other books set in Oz. T he books were so well loved that Baum's publishers continued the series with other authors to extend the Oz canon to forty books. Although the story seems quintessentially American, the Oz books have become popular world-wide, and the Wizard has been translated into most major languages.

LIFE:

Lyman Frank Baum was born in Chittenago, NY, the son of a businessman/ theatrical entrepreneur; Baum's father had made a fortune in the oil business. Baum’s health was weak in childhood, and he was primarily educated at home, suffering a nervous breakdown when he was sent away to military academy. Already at age 12 he was publishing a family paper, the Rose Lawn Journal , stimulated by his fascination with a print shop he had seen in Syracuse. He also developed an interest in breeding Hamburg chickens, and his first book, written in 1886, was about raising such chickens. At 18 he began reporting for a New York newspaper, but his real passion was for the stage, and he was determined to have a theatrical career. He didn’t do very well as an actor, but did have some theatrical success, particularly with The Maid of Arran , a melodrama that opened in 1882.
In 1881, Baum was introduced by his aunt and his sister to Maud Gage, daughter of a prominent member of the suffrage movement, Matilda Joslyn Gage . The aunt introduced her to Frank: “This is my nephew, Frank. Frank, I want you to know Maud Gage. I’m sure you will love her.” Baum: “Consider yourself loved, Miss Gage.” Maud: “Thank you, Mr. Baum. That’s a promise. Please see that you live up to it.” The courtship took a while, as she was in college and he was in New York working with

Baum, L. Frank Biography
Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) American journalist and writer, whose best-known book is The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900). Baum's stories about the imaginary Land of Oz belong to the classics of fantasy literature. The Oz series was long shunned by librarians, and neglected by scholars of children's literature. Baum has often been compared to Lewis Carroll - they both had a girl as the protagonist in their most famous works. "Yet the old-time fairy tale, having served for generations, may now be classed as 'historical' in the children's library; for the time has come for a series of newer 'wonder tales' in which the stereotyped genie, dwarf, and fairy are eliminated, together with all the horrible and blood-curling incident devised by their authors to point a fearsome moral to each tale. Modern education includes morality; therefore the modern child seeks only entertainment in its wonder-tales and gladly dispenses with all disagreeable incident." (Baum in the introduction to The Wonderful Wizard of Oz Lyman Frank Baum was born in Chittenango, New York. His father was the oil magnate Benjamin Ward Baum and mother Cynthia (Stanton) Baum, a women's rights activist. Baum grew up with his seven brothers and sisters on a large estate just north of Syracuse. "The cool but sun-kissed mansion... was built in a quaint yet pretty fashion, with many wings and gables and broad verandas on every side," Baum later wrote in DOT AND TOT IN FAIRYLAND (1901). The house, although it was large, did not have running water.

Lyman Frank Baum was born on 15 May in Chittennango, NY (near Syracuse). His father is a barrel maker, who subsequently goes into the oil business and becomes wealthy.
As a young boy and then teenager he starts up several newspapers and a magazine. In his late teens he becomes interested in the theater, and his father gives him a number of theaters and operas in New York and Pennsylvania to manage.
Writes and publishes a successful musical play, "The Maid of Arran".
Marries Maud Gage. Her mother is a leading figure in the Women's Rights Movement of the time, and a close associate of Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony.
Baum's father dies and the family fortunes wane. A number of Maud's family have moved to the Dakota Territory, so Frank, Maud, and children join them in Aberdeen (South Dakota). For several years he operates a store, "Baum's Bazaar." It falls victim to hard times in 1890, so he turns to running the local weekly newspaper, "The Aberdeen Saturday Pioneer."1891
When the newspaper fails, Frank and family move to Chicago where he takes a job as a reporter for the "Evening Post." To make ends meet he also works as a traveling salesman for a china company. He develops characters and situation outlines while on these trips to help him with story telling to his children when back at home.

Lyman Frank Baum (1856-1919) was a sickly child with a heart problem and a huge imagination. While he suffered at his short stint at military school, he excelled at independent creative projects like creating his own newspapers, the first of which he called The Rose Lawn Home Journal. Over the course of his life he created many such small papers, and failed at as many small business ventures. In 1882 he married Maud, the daughter of noted feminist Matilda Joslyn Gage, and together they moved to the Dakota territory in 1888. His second book for children, Father Goose, His Book, was created with renown illustrator W.W. Denslow in 1899, and became a bestseller. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz soon followed, but the partnership with Den didn't last. Although Baum might have preferred to vary his writings and to create American fairy tales, the incessant fan mail from children prompted him to pen 14 more books in the Oz series, all illustrated by John R. Neill. However, he also wrote things like Sky Island and a popular teenage girls' series called Aunt Jane’s Nieces (under the pseudonym Edith Van Dyne At his death in 1919
