http://www.lib.ncsu.edu/archives/exhibits/Tippmann/voyages.html
Voyages and Travels
Many of the works in the Tippmann Collection are European travel narratives dating from the eighteenth through the twentieth centuries. These works focus on the natural history and sometimes specifically on the insects of a region or country. Explorers, often accompanied by naturalists and artists, traveled to Asia, South America, and Antarctica in search of adventure. The naturalists on these voyages described and collected the flora and fauna of a region, while the artists drew specimens for future publication.
Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) was a British naturalist and entomologist, who amassed large general collections of Amazonian specimens during fourteen years of field work. Accompanied by Alfred Russel Wallace, he set out to become a professional collector of specimens in the Amazon in 1848. Bates discovered that closely related species often were separated geographically by rivers, but he did not realize this was evidence of geographical speciation. Bates studied color patterns in butterflies, which defined Batesian mimicry, a natural phenomena in which nonpoisonous species mimic the bright warning colors of poisonous ones. Henry Walter Bates, 1825-1892.

not the actual total number of referrals ; I believe the system used here is more fairly reflective of the relative attention given each person overall in Wallace's writings because it doesn't put undue weight on long works that contain a very large number of mentions of a particular person. The following individuals scored a '20' or higher on this scale, ranked in order. Darwin, Charles [English naturalist 1809-1882]. This total clearly indicates what a tremendous debt Wallace's work owed to Darwin, whether Wallace agreed with him all the time or not.
Spencer, Herbert
[English philosopher and sociologist 1820-1903]. Wallace had genuine admiration for Spencer's abilities as a thinker, though later on in their careers he came to feel that Spencer had lost his direction.

Scope and content The Scientists Collection is a miscellaneous assemblage of individual letters and small groups of correspondence of American and European scientists from the 17th through 20th centuries. The disciplines represented are varied, with significant depth in natural history, conchology, geology, and astronomy, and there are separate series for physicists (58 items, relating especially to Max Planck), and American-Russian scientific exchange prior to the Russian Revolution (46 items). The circle of Darwin and, more generally, of mid-19th century British natural historians, is also well represented in the Scientists Collection. Included in the collection are valuable letters from John Edward Gray, William Whewell, John Lubbock, and John Stevens Henslow, and there is a small set of letters from Robert Chambers, as well as a fascinating exchange between the publisher John Murray and the naturalist, Henry W. Bates, concerning publication of Bates'

Fabricius was a Danish pupil of the famous Swedish naturalist Linnaeus (1707-1778) and their work provides a direct link between the earlier observers and the later systematists as the describers of life on earth, or biodiversity as we now call it. [Hunter Colln. D/4; Syst.Ent. 479/157]
The extraordinary combination of two men from Leicester, England, who made their mark in increasing knowledge of the natural world come together in this one specimen. Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) worked principally in the Oriental region, having originally explored the Amazon in the company of Bates but his collection was lost in a fire onboard ship on the way back to Britain. He independently elaborated ideas evolution by natural selection and so Darwin and he published jointly the scientific paper that announced it to the world.
Henry Walter Bates (1825-1892) spent his time as an explorer in South America and came back to describe insects collected by himself and others, including this species from his old friend Wallace.
