IN HONOR OF A GREAT DOMINICAN Vincent McNabb O.P. His Life Was A Sermon That Still Resounds by Paul Likoudis A painting by Hugh McDonald In that small, exclusive circle of truly, inimitably great 20th-century Dominican scholars and preachers, the Irishman Fr. Vincent McNabb is at once the most attractive and perplexing. To Hillaire Belloc, G.K. Chesterton, Maurice Baring, Eric Gill, Msgr. Ronald Knox, and other leaders of the Catholic revival in England in the first half of this century, McNabb was a prophet and a saint. Belloc's judgment, upon hearing of the death of McNabb in June, 1943, expressed their common opinion: "The greatness of his character, of his learning, his experience, and, above all, his judgment, was something altogether separate from the world around him. Those who knew him marveled increasingly at every aspect of that personality. But the most remarkable aspect of all was the character of holiness. . . . Never have I seen or known anything on such a scale." Yet the view of many of McNabb's brothers in the Dominican order was very much the opposite. To some he was a sham, a hypocrite, an eccentric, a fool, and a bother. The way of life he practiced, which rejected anything made by a machine, they said, was impractical. Even as a writer, McNabb refused to use a typewriter. When someone once tried to persuade him how efficient the typewriter was, he replied with characteristic sharpness:

    Who was Silvestri?
From Leo Abse In the very last days of the war in Europe the roulette of military postings took me, as a young RAF sergeant, to Rome. There I had a memorable meeting with Ignazio Silone, about whom Martin Clark wrote in the last issue ( LRB , 9 August ). It was a chastening encounter. Silone was for me, as for many teenagers in the 1930s, an anti-Fascist icon; the humanity, courage and stoicism that informed his novels, the directness and freedom from rodomontade that enveloped them, the innocence and simplicity that pervaded them, all found resonance in the political idealism of our adolescence; we were enchanted. I immediately told Silone how indebted I and many young men and women were to him. He did not modestly brush aside my obeisances; on the contrary, when I told him I would be filing an account of our meeting in

    Biographical History
Emma Alice Margaret (Margot) Asquith was born in 1864, the sixth daughter of Scots parents Emma and Charles Tennant. Her father 'an exceptionally enterprising and farseeing man of business' (DNB), became very wealthy, and developed a taste for collecting fine art and porcelain. He was a Member of Parliament from 1879 until 1886, and created a baronet in 1885. In 1853 he bought an estate in Peeblesshire, Scotland and enlarged the house The Glen, which was to become the family home in which Margot spent her youth. She received a very limited education from a governess, and recalled 'It was only because my father had a fine library and we were fond of reading that I learned anything before I was sixteen' (

Because Special Collections have no access to stacks and searching through call numbers (shelf list approach) is complicated, for your convenience we are including listings of books by the Library of Congress call numbers (a few additional titles can also be found under the Dewey Decimal Classification syatem) in religion and philosophy (B), history (D), art (N), and language and literature (PG). This is not a comprehensive listing of Slavic materials in Special Collections but it is extensive and representative of Stanford's holdings. Materials in classifications others than those represented below can also be found. A large portion of Slavic materials housed in Special Collections is not yet cataloged.

When Sir James Gunn exhibited his famous painting, "The Conversation Piece," depicting G.K. Chesterton, Hilaire Belloc, and Maurice Baring assembled round a table, Chesterton, with characteristic humor, labeled the three figures, "Baring, over-bearing, and past-bearing." Yet Gunn's group portrait, which now hangs in the National Portrait Gallery in London, represented much more than a mere assemblage of friends. The three literary figures were considered by the reading public to be inseparable in many respects. They shared a common friendship, a common philosophy, and a common faith. If not as indivisible as the Holy Trinity, they were at least as indomitable as the Three Musketeers. Indeed, in the case of the Belloc-Baring-Chesterton chimera, the battle cry of "all-for-one and one-for-all" is not inappropriate. However, if all three shared much in common, it would be true to say that Baring is the least known of the trio and that, as often as not, he is overlooked. He was certainly overlooked by Bernard Shaw when the latter compared Chesterton and Belloc to two halves of a "very amusing pantomime elephant," which he dubbed the Chesterbelloc. For Shaw, writing his lampoon of the Chesterbelloc in 1908, G.K. Chesterton and Hilaire Belloc were now seen so synonymously that they had become nothing more than mouthpieces of a monster larger than both of them. Shaw's potent and amusing image became a literary legend, and it has been the fate of Maurice Baring to live in its shadow. His fame and reputation have been largely eclipsed by the enduring popularity of his two brothers-in-arms. This is both unfortunate and unjust because Baring deserves recognition as a distinguished poet and novelist in his own right.

Born in London in 1874, Maurice Baring was a man of letters, a scion of a family long prominent in the financial ventures of the British Empire. The son of the 1st Baron Revelstoke (a director of the Bank of England and a senior partner at Baring Bros.) he was educated at Eton and at Cambridge, and joined the diplomatic service in 1898. In 1904 he became a journalist and reported the Russo-Japanese War in Manchuria; later he was a correspondent in Russia and Constantinople. He is credited with having discovered Chekov's work in Moscow and helping to introduce it to the West. Baring is remembered as a versatile, prolific and highly successful writer, who produced articles, plays, biographies, criticism, poetry, translations, stories and novels. He is regarded as a representative of the social culture that flourished in England before World War I, his work highly regarded to this day for the acute intimate portraits of the time.
