by Joseph Epstein I n The Puppet Show of Memory Maurice Baring Restored In a letter written in 1859 from Berlin, where he was then a student, Henry Adams writes of doing business with the Baring Brothers Bank. It was into this family of merchant bankers, founded in 1740, that Maurice Baring was born in 1874, the seventh of eight children. In her recent biography of Baring, The Puppet Show of Memory Kultur Maurice Baring, whose dates are 1874-1945, lived through a remarkable stretch of history, having been old enough to have met men who fought at Waterloo, to have had an aunt who played her harp for Lord Byron, to have had other relatives (intense verbal conservatives) who preferred to say cowcumbers instead of cucumbers, to have seen Sarah Bernhardt when she was in her prime, to have been a boy when Treasure Island A nd yet a shadow falls across some of the things that Maurice Baring wrote, as it seems to have fallen across his life, that makes one wonder if, in a reflective and largely spectatorial life, even all the advantages are sufficient. Not that Baring ever complained. Not from him do you hear the by now almost standard English literary rant about that absolute hell that was school days. Although not an athlete, Baring enjoyed Eton, as he wrote in an essay in Lost Lectures The Puppet Show of Memory Maurice Baring was also developing a small but genuine reputation as a mild eccentric, English schoolboy division. He was from the beginning extravagant with money, perhaps owing to his having grown up with so much of it about the house. At Cambridge he edited a few issues of an undergraduate magazine to which he contributed topsy-turvy fairy tales he called

TRISTAN and ISOLT
Tristan and Isolt are second only to Lancelot and Guinevere as the great lovers of the Arthurian legends. The story of their tragic love has been the subject of numerous medieval and modern retellings. The medieval versions of the story are sometimes divided into two branches, called the courtly and the common versions. The former is represented by the Tristan of the Anglo-Norman poet Thomas, which was written in the latter part of the twelfth century. His version in turn influenced Gottfried von Strassburg, whose Tristan , written in the first decade of the thirteenth century, is one of the great romances of the Middle Ages, and the Old Norse Tristrams saga Roman de Tristran , which like Eilhart von Oberge's Middle High German Tristrant , also written in the late twelfth century, has some elements considered less than courtly. For example, the love potion in these versions is of limited duration; and Isolt is turned over by Mark to a colony of lepers as punishment for her infidelity. There were many other medieval versions of the tale, including a long French prose romance, the Middle English poem
