UNIVERSITY of EDINBURGH A Critical Assessment of ASPECTS OF ILLUSTRATION AND TRANSLATION IN CHILDREN’S LITERATURE Nafisa Abd El-Sadek Apologies if any footnotes, credits, permissions or other information has become lost in this html version. This paper aims to continue the research of the previous paper, which looked at the poetics of children’s literature, its special characteristics and some of the prominent social forces in its history. Two important aspects of children’s literature which will be examined in the present paper are the dynamics of translation and illustration in children’s literature. Illustration plays a much larger part in children’s literature than in adult literature as it is utilized as a device to help reading even before the child knows how to read. Illustration translates into images the ideas found in the words of the story, and sometimes constitutes the whole story, as there may be no words. Children’s literature has spread geographically and endured the passage of time as a result of its illustrations and translations into different languages and this is another topic which the present paper will touch upon. Although some of the writers and publishers discussed in the present paper, such as Perrault, Newbery, Briggs and Nakazawa have already been introduced in the first paper, they will now be investigated from the viewpoint of illustration and translation, and their work will be used to exemplify the various points arising in relation to these aspects. The background and experiences leading to writers becoming involved in various kinds of writing will be looked at in more detail, for example, the life and experiences of Helen Bannerman whose books were first written in Indian English over a century ago as well as trends first started at the very beginnings of the era of printed illustrations, the economic forces surrounding them and the enduring effect they have had on conventions surrounding children’s books and their production, translation and illustration.
