Robert Michael Ballantyne
Scottish Novelist and short story writer R.M. Ballantyne, born in Edinburgh, Scotland, received little formal education. In 1841 he joined the Hudson Bay Company, where he worked as a clerk at the Red River Settlement (dealing in fur trading) in Northern Canada. In 1848 he returned to Edinburgh and began work with Constable's printing firm there. His early narrative 'The Young Fur Traders' (1856), draws on his experience in Canada. Ballantyne, noted for his stories for boys, wrote over eighty novels, the most famous of which is 'The Coral Island' (1857). Also well known are 'The Gorilla Hunters' (1862), a sequel to 'The Coral Island' and 'Fighting the Flames' (1867), a novel about firefighters. 'Coral Island' was one of the most successful novels of its type in the Victorian period and allowed Ballantyne to give up his job at Constable's to work full time as a professional writer. It is a colonial fable, the story of three boys shipwrecked on a desert island. As with all his stories, its popularity was based on tales of masculine resourcefulness and ferocious fighting. It is the precursor of William Golding's much darker, disturbing novel 'Lord of the Flies'. Reading list Submit your comments

Isaac Babel (Rusia, 1894-1941)
¡Levemos anclas! "
