Home Vintage and Classic Authors A-Z Only short excerpts may be used with this notice. Louisa May Alcott by Lorraine Curry (1832-1888) When she was two, Louisa May Alcott's family moved to Boston, where her father established a school (described in Little Men). He later attempted to start a religious and vegetarian community. Her mother was a "Boston lady of great culture and beauty" whose girls almost idolized her while she gently ruled and guided them. Her three rules: "Love yourself," "Love your neighbor," and "Do the duty which lies nearest you" surely influenced Louisa May. Horatio Alger Alger wrote 109 books between 1868 and 1898. For the Alger hero, wealth and success were rewards for duty, patience and resignation, not the result of struggle and competition, but gifts of Providence, chance, virtue, and good fortune. A writer for boys should have an abundant sympathy with them. He should be able to enter into their plans, hopes, and aspirations. He should learn to look upon life as they do. Boys object to be written down to. A boy's heart opens to the man or writer who understands him. Horatio Alger Joseph Altsheler by Jan Bloom, "Who Should We Then Read?"

Added col. pict. t.p., half-title. Burnham was born at Peterborough, Ontario, and became a lawyer and a member of parliament as well as a writer. (Rhodenizer p. 730). His Jack Ralston leaves his home in Montreal to join the service of the Hudson's Bay Company in Labrador where he quickly achieves a position of trust and leadership. Although the story is filled with exciting incidents, and a touch of romance, its main thrust is the hostility between the Eskimo and the Indians which the Hudson Bay people tried to ameliorate in the interests of trade. The author of this book strongly favoured the Eskimo, and was extremely denigrating towards the Indians of the region. 430 [DE MILLE, James] 1837-1880.
