Scottish writer for boys, noted for the adventure story THE CORAL ISLAND (1858), which Robert Louis Stevenson acknowledged as the formative influence of his own love of the South Seas. The book has not been out of print since it first appeared. Several abridged editions have been published for young readers. Ballantyne's narrative skill, colourful settings, and resourcefulness of his heroes have secured his popularity throughout generations. "For many months after this we continued to live on our island in uninterrupted harmony and happiness. Sometimes we went out afishing in the lagoon, and sometimes went ahunting in the woods, or ascended to the mountain-top, by way of variety, although Peterkin always asserted that we went for the purpose of hailing any ship that might chance to heave in sight. But I am certain that none of us wished to be delivered from our captivity, for we were extremely happy, and Peterkin used to say that as we were very young we should not feel the loss of a year or two."

Children's Literature
Island 4: Boys' Stories of School, Adventure, and Empire Series publishing for gifts and prizes The pioneer writer of boys' adventure stories was Frederick Marryatt (1792-1848), an ex-naval officer who wrote a whole series of shipboard novels. His Masterman Ready, or the Wreck of the Pacific , first published in three volumes in 1841-42, is a desert island story in the tradition of Robinson Crusoe and Swiss Family Robinson . It was ten years later before a second edition was called for, but many more followed. The reprint shown here, from Frederick Warne's Prize Library series in 1891, is open at a typical publisher's catalogue of the period, listing title after title suitable for gifts and school (or Sunday School) prizes. R. M. Ballantyne and boys' adventure stories R. M. Ballantyne (1825-1894), the son of an Edinburgh printer who was apprenticed to the Hudson's Bay Company in Canada as a teenager, created boys' adventure stories that both instilled the values of manly independence and conveyed (from the author's personal experience) an extraordinary range of information about exciting, dangerous new career opportunities. His best-known work Coral Island is shown in an earlier case. Displayed here are a reprint of Ballantyne's first book

"Zebros and elsophants":
Images of blacks in natural history adventure-empire tales read by young people in Wellington County, Ontario, 1880-1890 by lian goodall The four books under study were all written in the second half of the nineteenth century. They represent a volume of literature written on one of the most popular subjects for children in the late Victorian age: natural history. Such books taught children about the flora, fauna, and the British subjects in far-away colonies, serving to transmit altitudes toward other races and countries. The expansion of the British Empire, the increasing interest in natural history which was fueled by writings of Darwin and other scientists, and the development of middle class literacy all converged to make natural history the subject of a vast number of factual and fictional works. Children were especially enthralled by the stories of explorer-heroes. The tales of explorers provided the kind of detail that fed the natural scientific curiosity of children, while at the same time giving them more general information about the far reaches of the expanding British empire. Thus, these books satiated the youngster's curiosity about the "geography, resources and people"(3) in the empire, and, as well, they held romantic attraction for young readers. The names of Livingstone and Stanley, famous at the time, are still well-known today (4).
