Ball's observation of the 1882 transit of Venus at Dunsink
"I venture to record our personal experience of the last transit of Venus, which we had the good fortune to view from Dunsink Observatory of the afternoon of the 6th of December, 1882. The morning of the eventful day appeared to be about as unfavourable for a grand astronomical spectacle as could well be imagined. Snow, a couple of inches thick, covered the ground, and more was falling, with but little intermission, all the forenoon. It seemed almost hopeless that a view of the phenomenon could be obtained from that observatory; but it is well in such cases to bear in mind the injunction given to the observers on a celebrated eclipse expedition. They were instructed, no matter what the day should be like, that they were to make all their preparations precisely as they would have done were the sun shining with undimmed splendour. By this advice no doubt many observers have profited; and we acted upon it with very considerable success. A.D.

48. Sir Robert Stawell Ball
Sir Robert Ball. Transcript of a lecture given to the members of Wolverhampton Astronomical Society, 2nd April the man himself. Robert STOWALL Ball (1840 1913 ) Born in Dublin on
http://www.geocities.com/ziksby2/Sir_Robert_Ball.html
SIR ROBERT BALL
Robert Ball was of Irish extraction, but tracing the Ball lineage takes us back to 16th Century England; to Devon, where his ancestors were landowners, with estates in Mamhead near Dawlish and Morebath just north of Tiverton. Naturally some of his forefathers had military connections; including:
A great great great grandfather who was an officer in the 1680 army of Charles II. On the other side of the Atlantic, Bent Ball, a great uncle fought under William Howe as a captain in the 63rd regiment in the American War of Independence. Despite being severely wounded by 3 musket balls at the Battle of Bunker Hill, he lived on until he was 80, dying in 1832 and with one of the shots still inside him.
Coincidentally, two of the Ball lineage were astronomers in the late 17th century. They were brothers William and Peter. Ball only found out about these ancestors when he researched his family history much later in life.
Inevitably, there was a black sheep in the family, who went by the name of Nicholas Ball; his main claim to fame seems to have been his love of gambling. His epitaph read
Here lies Nick Ball
Who had a fall
From grandeur to decay
His fine estate
His gold and plate
All lost was in a day "Mamhead" the stake

Cambridge
The University of Cambridge
Dates from before 1209 when a group of students left Oxford after a riot and went to Cambridge. The first recorded Chancellor was elected by 1246. Town and gown riots occurred in Cambridge as well and in 1381 all the university records were publicly burned, resulting in considerable obscurity about the early history of the university. The Cambridge system has undergone many changes, but from 1747-1748 until 1910 there was an extended examination, called the Tripos, and the top students were ranked in order as senior wrangler, second wrangler, .... The total numbers of students with mathematical honours for 1747/48 to 1899 areTrinity 5948; St. John's 4224; Gonville and Caius 1533; with the other colleges trailing behind. By the early 20C, the Tripos system was replaced by unordered results within classes, like most other English universities.
