Editor (1860-77) of the highly regarded Economist , he studied the English banking system (Lombard Street, 1873) and economy (Economic Studies, 1880). His classic English Constitution (1867) distinguished effective government institutions from those in decay, while Physics and Politics (1872) was an early application of DARWINISM to the social sciences. Bagehot, Walter (1826-1877)
Bagehot was a critic, essayist and writer on political and economic affairs best known for The English constitution published in 1867. In 1860 he became editor of The Economist , which had been founded by his father-in-law, James Wilson, in 1843. The collection consists of Bagehot's correspondence with Eliza Wilson prior to their marriage in 1858, and with her father. This was edited by E.I. Barrington and published under the title The love letters of Walter Bagehot and Eliza Wilson in 1933. [DX/123] Maintained by Archives and Special Collections , Brynmor Jones Library
