THE BAXTERS: SARAH(4) 1758-1839 Sarah Chenoweth, the oldest child of Arthur Chenoweth and Ann Beasman, was born December 20, 1759 in Baltimore Co., MD. She married there at the age of 19 to Samuel Baxter, who was 21 at the time. Samuel was the son of Greenbury Baxter and Charity Lane. His sister, Sarah, married Sarah's uncle, William Chenoweth, and his sister, Elizabeth, married Sarah's brother, Arthur. Samuel rendered loyal service during the Revolutionary War as a private and collector of fines for non-enrollers. All 9 of Sarah and Samuel's children were born in Baltimore Co., MD. By 1803, the Baxters had settled near Cross Creek, Brooke Co., VA (now WV) near Samuel's uncle, William Baxter. On the 1810 Virginia Census of Brooke County, Samuel Baxter, son-in-law Henry Butler, and Henry's father, Nicholas Butler, are all found on page 11. Son-in-law, Samuel Gist, who was married to the Baxter's oldest daughter, Annie, is found on page 1 of this same census. Arthur Chinwith, Sarah's brother, is on page 7 of the Census where he was shown as operating a country gristmill. In 1812, the Baxters moved west to Muskingum Co., OH. On December 2, 1812, Samuel Baxter purchased from John Newalls, Sr. of Westmoreland Co., PA, the southwest quarter of Section No. 22 of Township No. 2 in Range No. 8 of the United States Military Tract within the District of Zanesville and for which a patent was issued by the President of the United States on April 20, 1812. This 160 acre tract of land in southern Muskingum Twp. would remain in the family until September 1863 when their son Samuel Baxter Jr. and his wife Actus sold the property (less the meetinghouse and graveyard) as they were preparing to move west to Henderson Twp., Knox Co., IL.
