His swift rise to power was aided by his friendship with King James I "The world's a bubble and the life of man less than a span."
Francis Bacon There is a legend that Francis Bacon was the illegitimate son of Elizabeth I and Robert Dudley, the Earl of Leicester. Some scholars maintain that he was the true author of Shakespeare's works. However, there is little doubt that he devised the deductive system for empirical research, which rightly earned him the title "Father of Modern Science". He was also a charming man, able politician and one of the greatest prose stylists in the English language. The youngest son of Nicholas Bacon, the Lord Keeper of the Seal of Elizabeth I, Francis was born in

    Francis Bacon (1561-1626)

    Bacon, Francis (1561-1626)
As for the narrations touching the prodigies and miracles of religions, they are either not true, or not natural, therefore impertinent for the story of nature. As the birds of living creatures at first are ill-shapen, so are all innovations, which are the births of time . . . Surely every medicine is an innovation; and he that will not apply new remedies must expect new evils; for time is the greatest innovator. But men must know, that in this theater of man's life it is reserved only for God and the angels to be lookers on. For whatever deserves to exist deserves also to be known, for knowledge is the image of existence, and things mean and splendid exist alike. Great hypocrites are the true atheists. It is sufficiently clear that all things are changed, and nothing really perishes, and that the sum of matter remains absolutely the same.

    Historiographical Review
Historical interest in Bacon has revived recently, as scholars in the history of women, especially, have reexamined the Baconian philosophy. Bacon's metaphors relating to nature are now seen as perniciously male-conquest and rape, for interest. In addition, we can see Bacon's role as a lawyer and statesman as influencing his ideology of science. Rather than ancillary to the development of the mechanical philosophy, masculinization of nature and legal atomism are seen by some historians as shaping the substance of the mechanistic paradigm and as preparing English society for acceptance of the new philosophy of nature. For graduate students, a useful introduction to the newly emerging interpretation of mechanism would be to review the shift from the older Bacon literature (Anderson, Cajori, and Farrington) to the new studies (Jardine, Keller, Leary, Schiebinger). Undergraduates would get a useful term paper out of reading an original work by Bacon, such as The New Atlantis ( published 1627), according to one of the new interpretations.
