  • On two occasions I have been asked [by members of Parliament!], "Pray, Mr. Babbage, if you put into the machine wrong figures, will the right answers come out?" I am not able rightly to apprehend the kind of confusion of ideas that could provoke such a question. "I wish to God these calculations had been executed by steam."
    • Notes: Babbage said this in 1821 while he and John Herschel were proofreading mathematical tables for the Astronomical Society. "The whole of arithmetic now appeared within the grasp of mechanism."
      • Notes: Babbage said this with regard to his Analytical Engine. "Propose to an Englishman any principle, or any instrument, however admirable, and you will observe that the whole effort of the English mind is directed to find a difficulty, a defect, or an impossiblity in it. If you speak to him of a machine for peeling a potato, he will pronounce it impossible: if you peel a potato with it before his eyes, he will declare it useless, because it will not slice a pineapple."
        • Notes: Babbage said this with regard to his Analytical Engine, thus becoming the world's first programmer.

The Charles Babbage Computer Centre Named after the British computing pioneer, Charles Babbage, (1791 - 1871), the centre comprises three computer laboratories. Two laboratories each contain 30 of the latest multi-media Pentium machines, with a suite of Microsoft Office applications, Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0 programming development environment and specialised subject software. This enables students to study at the leading edge of today's technology. The third laboratory contains 6 IBM compatible computers which are also networked for the exclusive use of 6th Form students. The British School of Computing also makes use of these facilities. There are also 40 Archimedes computers with concept keyboards and printers and 26 Research Machines PCs . These are available for every Early Years Lower Department Kindergarten class has access to 13 IBM compatible computers.

In der Computergeschichte wird Charles Babbage oft als der "erste Computerpionier" gefeiert, als ein Wissenschaftler und Erfinder, der seiner Zeit um 100 Jahre voraus war. Dieser Ruf gründet sich vorwiegend auf die Erfindung der "Analytical Engine", einer mechanischen "automatischen Rechenmaschine", die mit Rechenwerk, Speicher, Eingabe und Ausgabe ausgestattet war und deren Rechenabläufe mit Lochkarten gesteuert werden sollten. Der 1791 in Walworth (England) als Sohn eines Bankiers geborene Charles Babbage studierte von 1810 bis 1814 in Cambridge Mathematik. Seit 1816 war er "Fellow" der "Royal Society", der wichtigsten wissenschaftlichen Gesellschaft in England. Nach dem Tod seines Vaters finanziell unabhängig, nahm er - ohne je ein offizielles Amt zu bekleiden - großen Einfluss auf die Wissenschaftsentwicklung in England. Er trat nicht nur als Mathematiker und Erfinder, sondern vor allem auch als Wissenschafts- und Gesellschaftsreformer hervor. Berühmt wurde Babbage durch die Erfindung der "Difference Engine". Die Beschäftigung mit der aufwendigen und fehlerträchtigen Berechnung von mathematischen Tafelwerken brachte ihn 1821 auf die Idee, dies mit Hilfe einer Maschine durch wiederholtes Aufaddieren von Differenzen automatisch durchführen zu lassen. Der Bau der aus 25.000 Teilen bestehenden "Difference Engine" wurde zu einem der Ersten (gescheiterten) wissenschaftlichen Großprojekte. 1833 wurde die Arbeit am Bau der Maschine nach einem Streit zwischen Babbage und dem Ingenieur Joseph Clement eingestellt. Bis dahin waren mehr Regierungsgelder verbraucht worden, als 20 Dampflokomotiven gekostet hätten. Andere Erfinder bauten die Ersten funktionierenden Differenzenmaschinen, waren aber von den Ideen von Babbage beeinflusst.

A partire dal 1820, Charles Babbage (1791-1871) che era professore di matematica all'università di Cambridge ed esperto di costruzioni ferroviarie, tanto che venne chiamato anche in Italia per risolvere alcuni problemi della linea Torino-Genova, intuì per primo l'importanza delle ramificazioni condizionali nei computer. A tal proposito, a partire dal 1820 circa, Babbage compì degli importanti studi che lo portarono alla realizzazione di due macchine :

Charles Babbage La macchina alle differenze All'epoca le tabelle matematiche, quelle dei logaritmi ad esempio, non venivano create calcolando il reale logaritmo di ognuna delle voci, ma si basavano su determinati numeri selezionati per poi calcolare i valori intermedi mediante il procedimento di interpolazione, usando le cosiddette differenze; A quei tempi il calcolo era una professione, le tavole logaritmiche erano necessarie, le tabelle trigonometriche erano indispensabili per la navigazione che aveva ancora i suoi riferimenti nelle stelle e nei pianeti. Non mancavano certo gli errori, che andavano dalle semplici operazioni di calcolo, alle difficoltà per il posizionamento corretto dei caratteri di stampa, la volontà di eliminare questi errori portò Babbage al progetto ed alla successiva realizzazione del Motore di differenza.
