Charles Babbage
Charles Babbage(1791-1871) was an early 18th-19th century mathematician and engineer. He is well known for his Difference Engine - the first successful automatic calculator and remains one of the finest examples of precision engineering of the time. His later Analytical Engine was a much faster and more powerful machine - a replica of which resides in the London Science Museum.

"The Father of the Computer" "One evening I was sitting in the rooms of the Analytical Society at Cambridge, my head leaning forward on the table in a kind of dreamy mood, with a Table of logarithms lying open before me. Another member, coming into the rooms, and seeing me half asleep, called out, 'Well, Babbage, what are you dreaming about?' to which I replied, 'I am thinking that all these Tables might be calculated by machinery.'" In "On a Method of Expressing by Signs the Action of Machinery," Babbage for the first time demonstrated his new mechanical notation system, a system which would be essential for all the design work for his famous Difference Engine. By developing a detailed systematic method for labeling the parts of a machine and their relative motions, Babbage created "the most formal method of describing switching systems until Boolean algebra was applied to the problem in the middle of the twentieth century" (Hyman).
"It was reserved for the profound genius of Mr. Babbage, to make the greatest advance in mechanical calculation by embodying in a machine the principles of the calculus of differences... Mr. Babbage has shown that material machinery is capable, in theory at least, of rivalling the labours of the most practised mathematicians in all branches of their science. Mind thus seems able to impress some of its highest attributes upon matter and to create its own rival in the wheels and levers of an insensible machine."

Alan Turing Frankenstein was written - Babbage showed that a machine could be created which could replicate certain areas of human thought. Babbage designed first the Difference Engine (an automatic mechanical calculating machine) and then the Analytical Engine (a pioneer digital computer). His designs included a central processing unit ('the Mill'), memory ('the Store'), variables, operators and a printer to output conclusions. The design was one thing, actually constructing the machines with the available technology proved to be extremely difficult. Notwithstanding substantial grants from the Royal Society and the British Government Babbage failed to create either. That glory was left to the Swedish printer, Georg Scheutz, who won a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition for constructing the Difference Engine. A close friend and collaborator in much of his work was Augusta Ada Byron, later the Countess of Lovelace, who was the only child of Lord Byron. She was confident of the importance of the machine, stating that

Charles Babbage,
Father of the Modern Computer
by Sean Meek, Director of Project CREATION Evolutionists like to cloak their fairytale of evolutionism in the successes of modern science, but Bible believing Creationists have made virtually all of the great discoveries of science. Charles Babbage was one such scientist. He was founder of both Royal Astronomical Society and the British Association's Statistical Society. His inventions ran the gamut from the heliograph opthalmoscope to the cowcatcher. He began working on the first computer, called an Analytical Engine, in 1834 using punch cards and ultimately designed the logical structure of the modern computer. Babbage was a Christian who believed in the truthfulness of the Bible and wrote "Miracles are not the breach of established laws, but . . . indicate the existence of far higher laws". Charles Babbage
Born December 26, 1791 in Teignmouth, Devonshire UK, Died 1871, London; Known to some as the "Father of Computing" for his contributions to the basic design of the computer through his Analytical machine. His previous Difference Engine was a special purpose device intended for the production of tables. While he did produce prototypes of portions of the Difference Engine, it was left to Georg and Edvard Schuetz to construct the first working devices to the same design which were successful in limited applications. Significant Events in His Life: 1791: Born; 1810: Entered Trinity College, Cambridge; 1814: graduated Peterhouse; 1817 received MA from Cambridge; 1820: founded the Analytical Society with Herschel and Peacock; 1823: started work on the Difference Engine through funding from the British Government; 1827: published a table of logarithms from 1 to 108000; 1828: appointed to the Lucasian Chair of Mathematics at Cambridge (never presented a lecture); 1831: founded the British Association for the Advancement of Science; 1832: published "Economy of Manufactures and Machinery"; 1833: began work on the Analytical Engine; 1834: founded the Statistical Society of London; 1864: published Passages from the Life of a Philosopher; 1871: Died.
    Other inventions:
The cowcatcher, dynamometer, standard railroad gauge, uniform postal rates, occulting lights for lighthouses, Greenwich time signals, heliograph opthalmoscope. He also had an interest in cyphers and lock-picking, but abhorred street musicians.

Both the date and place of Charles Babbage 's birth were uncertain but have now been firmly established. In [1] and [11], for example, his date of birth is given as 26 December 1792 and both give the place of his birth as near Teignmouth. Also in [17] it is stated:- Little is known of Mr Babbage's parentage and early youth except that he was born on December However, a nephew wrote to The Times a week after the obituary [17] appeared, saying that Babbage was born on 26 December 1791. There was little evidence to prove which was right until Hyman (see [7]) in 1975 found that Babbage's birth had been registered in St Mary's Newington, London on 6 January 1792. Babbage's father was Benjamin Babbage, a banker, and his mother was Betsy Plumleigh Babbage. Given the place that his birth was registered Hyman says in [7] that it is almost certain that Babbage was born in the family home of 44 Crosby Row, Walworth Road, London. Babbage suffered ill health as a child, as he relates in [3]:-

    Charles Babbage (1791 - 1871)
Babbage was a sickly child and initially received only a basic education. As a child he made shoes for walking on water: book covers tied to his feet in such a way that they opened when he put his foot down. However, he was most taken with algebra. By the time he went to Cambridge University he had read most of the standard, and some non-standard, texts. Shortly after graduation he was hired by the Royal Institution to lecture on calculus. Within two years he had been elected a member of the Royal Society and, with his Cambridge friends, was instrumental in setting up the Astronomical Society in 1820, the first to challenge the dominion of the Royal Society. The 1820s saw Babbage work on his 'Difference Engine', a machine that could perform some mathematical calculations to twenty decimal places. A six-wheeled model was initially constructed and demonstrated to a number of audiences. By this time, however, he had plans to construct a bigger, better, machine (Difference Engine 2), as well as a different machine altogether: the Analytical Engine - a forerunner of the modern digital computer. It was intended to be able to perform any arithmetical calculation using punched cards that would deliver the instructions, as well as a memory unit to store numbers and many other fundamental components of today's computers.

Charles Babbage was born on December 26, 1791 in Teignmouth , Devon, the son of a banker. He attended Trinity College, Cambridge and became a fellow of the Royal Society in 1816. He was active in establishing the Analytical, the Royal Astronomical and the Statistical societies. In 1817 Babbage was awarded his MA. Charles Babbage is mainly known as the inventor of a machine known as the Analytical Machine. This machine has been widely recognised as a major contribution to the basic design of the computers we have today. However Charles Babbage was a man of considerable intellect and was responsible for many inventions in his lifetime. HOW DID CHARLES BABBAGE DO THIS? In 1822 he wrote to the President of the Royal Society setting down his plans for calculating and printing mathematical tables by machine. Unfortunately, in 1827 Babbage's wife Georgiana died at the young age of 35. Following this, he travelled across Europe and did not return until the end of 1828. By this time Babbage's grant had run out so he was financing the project himself and needed to approach the Government once more for funding. In 1829 some of Babbage's friends arranged for the Duke of Wellington, the Prime Minister, to see a model of the Difference Engine. Wellington must have been impressed with what he saw, as he awarded Babbage a further grant of £3 000. The engineer Joseph Clement was hired to construct the engine. However, Babbage was to come into serious conflict with Clement, when, in 1830 Clement refused to move the engine from his premises to Babbage's new workshop. Babbage accused Clement of making "inordinately extravagant demands" and refused to give Clement any more money. This resulted in Clement stopping work and dismissing his workers. Development of the Difference Engine ground to a halt.

Charles Babbage Have you ever heard the expression, "... is ahead of his time. " ? This means a person has an idea that is far beyond the ability of all his friends to understand at the time the idea came up. This is what happened to a man named Charles Baggage The son of a banker, Charles Babbage was born on December 26, 1791 in Devonshire, United Kingdom. At the age of 19, he entered Trinity College at Cambridge University. Soon he became very frustrated by the number of errors he found in the mathematics tables he was required to use in his math classes. Determined to correct this, Babbage committed his energies to building a machine which would calculate the facts needed and do them correctly. This machine he called the Difference Engine. So, in 1822, he went to the British government and requested a grant to finance the building of this machine. He was given a partial grant in 1823 and instructed to begin immediately. However, it's unfortunate no one kept minutes of this agreement, because, in 1828, when Babbage returned for additional funds, no official could remember the original agreement. Being an incredibly stubborn man, he financed the project himself for a year while he continued to ask the government for funding. He got his wish in 1830.
