E l doctor Mariano Azuela fue un médico muy reconocido y preparado, pero no cabe duda que su mejor conocimiento fueron sus emocionantes novelas sobre la Revolución.
Los de abajo es su obra más famosa; es un clásico de la literatura mexicana y ha sido traducida a muchos idiomas. Tan sólo en castellano se publicaron más de un millón de ejemplares.
L o que pocos saben, es que fue escrita en El Paso, Texas, en 1915, cuando se vio obligado a emigrar a Estados Unidos para salvar su vida.
N ació en Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco. En Guadalajara se recibió como médico cirujano, profesión que ejerció con verdadera vocación hasta 1948.
E l ser médico y su gusto por apoyar a las clases necesitadas, le permitió conocer profundamente la vida de sus pacientes; y en esas experiencias estaban inspirados los personajes de sus novelas.
A sí pudo crear un estilo realista para retratar a la sociedad mexicana del final del porfiriato, de la Revolución y de la posrevolución.
A zuela también se acercó a la política, apoyando en su tierra natal las ideas antirreeleccionistas de Francisco I. Madero, quien al ser presidente lo nombró jefe político de Lagos. Cuando ocurrió la traición de Victoriano Huerta, Azuela se sumó a las fuerzas de Julián Medina, jefe villista. Por esta razón, al triunfo de don Venustiano, el doctor Azuela tuvo que salir del país.

REESE ALSOP A 1944 graduate of Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, Alsop practiced internal medicine for many years in Huntington, New York; and was an assistant professor of medicine at New York University. He has written for lay as well as popular periodicals.

    • Born in 1873 in Lagos de Moreno, Jalisco, Mexico; died of a heart attack in Mexico City in 1952. Buried in the Rotonda de Hombres Illust, Mexico's Westminster Abbey. Married Carmen Riveria; father of ten children. Educated as a doctor in Guadalajara; practiced medicine all his life, first in Lagos where he was born and later among the poor of Mexico City. Served as chief of political affairs in Lagos de Moreno and later as state director of education in Jalisco under the revolutionary government of Francisco I. Madero; after Madero's assasination, became a physician with the army of Pancho Villa and, after Villa's defeat, fled to El Paso, Texas. Returned to Mexico City in 1916.
    Career
    • Began writing while still a student and published his first novel, Maria Luisa , in 1907; continued to write throughout his life. Best known as a prolific novelist, though he also wrote short stories, plays, criticism, and history.

    Con l’intento di creare una letteratura nazionale messicana che smettesse di essere una sorta di succursale della cultura spagnola El cerro de las campanas (1868) e da Vicente Riva Palacio (1832-96) in Calvario y Tabor (1868). Sempre alla guerra dei peones si ispirano i romanzi, intrisi di romanticismo, di Ignacio El Zarco (1887-89). Per la descrizione realistica di Veracruz (sua patria) si distinse Rafael Delgado (1853-1914), con La Calandria (1890). Altri romanzi naturalistici ha scritto Federico Gamboa (1864-1939), fra cui Santa Dopo il 1910, alcuni autori scrissero saggi e romanzi ispirati a episodi memorabili della Rivoluzione. Con Los de abajo di Mariano Azuela , pubblicato nel 1915, ha inizio la prosa realistica del secolo XX. Malgrado scarsamente letta negli anni Venti, si tratta di una letteratura molto conosciuta e apprezzata nel mondo.
