Jane Austen: A Pathfinder Introduction Library of Congress Subject Headings Browsing Areas Locations ... Web Resources Introduction
Jane Austen is considered to be one of England's greatest authors, second only to William Shakespeare. Both scholars and general fans study her life and works; some even believe that Austen-mania has reached cult levels. There are many reasons for her popularity, the main being that at the heart of her stories are themes accessible to all audiences: friendship, love, misunderstanding, and family. Her works remain timeless, frequently being adapted for television and films. Austen's language is fresh and witty, making Regency England come alive for the reader. To read her characters is to wonder what the author herself was like. This pathfinder is meant for undergraduate students studying Jane Austen, specifically those studying at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The items cited here relate principally to Jane Austen's life; it is not meant to be a guide to critical works on her writing.

"A large income is the best recipe for happiness I ever heard of." -
Jane Austen (spoken by Mary Crawford in Mansfield Park In her own time (1775-1817), Jane Austen's books were contemporary romances. The daughter of a vicar, she lived quietly with her mother and sister. Despite her isolated life, she was an observant, often slightly cynical writer who portrayed the provincial middle and wanna-be upper classes. Several of her books contain comments on the literature of the time, such as her defense of novels and their readers and her look at the popular gothic genre. Kate Moore's article On Sex in the Regency in the Regency Reader analyses the courtship rituals in Jane Austen's novels. A brief analysis of just one of the novels, Pride and Prejudice, reveals both how observant Austen is of the slightest nuances of sexual attraction and how honest she is in portraying that attraction. Patricia Wynn , the author of several novels, reflects on the genre that Miss Austen founded, posthumously, and the current status of the Regency Romance novel. Thanks to her host, Henry Churchyard of the University of Texas, Miss Austen's

"JANE AUSTEN was born on 16 December 1775 at Steventon near Basingstoke, the seventh child of the rector of the parish. She lived with her family at Steventon until they moved to Bath when her father retired in 1801. After his death in 1805, she moved around with her mother; in 1809, they settled in Chawton, near Alton, Hampshire. Here she remained, except for a few visits to London, until May 1817, when she moved to Winchester to be near her doctor. There she died on 18 July 1817. "Jane Austen was extremely modest about her own genius, describing her work to her nephew, Edward, as `the little bit (two inches wide) of ivory, on which I work with so fine a brush, as produces little effect after much labour'. As a girl she wrote stories, including burlesques of popular romances. Her works were published only after much revision, four novels being published in her lifetime. These are Sense and Sensibility Pride and Prejudice Mansfield Park (1814) and Emma (1816). Two other novels

    Austen, Jane Biography
Jane Austen (1775-1817) English writer, who first gave the novel its modern character through the treatment of everyday life. Although Austen was widely read in her lifetime, she published her works anonymously. The most urgent preoccupation of her young, well-bred heroines is courtship, and finally marriage in the world dominated by men. Austen herself never married. Her best-known books include PRIDE AND PREJUDICE (1813) and EMMA (1816). Virginia Woolf called her "the most perfect artist among women." "It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." (from Pride and Prejudice Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was a rector. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight. The first 25 years of her life Austen spent in Hampshire. She was mostly tutored at home, and irregularly at school. Her parents were avid readers and she received a broader education than many women of her time. Her favorite poet was Cowper. On her father's retirement, the family sold off everything, including Jane's piano, and moved to Bath. Austen started to write for family amusement as a child. Her earliest-known writings date from about 1787. Very shy about her writing, she wrote on small pieces of paper that she slipped under the desk plotter if anyone came into the room. In her letters she observed the daily life of her family and fiends in an intimate and gossipy manner: "James danced with Alethea, and cut up the turkey last night with great perseverance. You say nothing of the silk stockings; I flatter myself, therefore, that Charles has not purchased any, as I cannot very well afford to pay for them; all my money is spent in buying white gloves and pink persian."

    Jane Austen (1775 - 1817)
Jane Austen famously stated that 'three or four families in a country village is the thing to work on,' and she remained steadfast in applying this trustworthy formula. The great strength of her novels is the social observations they contain: Austen employed a strong sense of irony in her critique of aristocratic disaffection and the pretensions of the nouveau riche. With a measured sardonic eye she was able to summarise social mores and the restraints suffered by women in Regency England. Born in the village of Steventon, Hampshire, to a rector, she began to write as a teenager and her early work display a keen perception of the absurd. It was not until the family move to Bath that she started to write seriously using the spa town as a location. She had the support of her brother Henry who helped negotiate with a publisher and the first novel, Sense and Sensibility , appeared in 1811. But it was

J ane Austen was a supreme English Romantic prose stylist and novelist whose writings have secured her a place in the English Literary Canon. Born in 1775, the second daughter of a parish rector, Jane Austen lived all her life as a member of the landed gentry in the English country side. Though she was not published until she was thirty-five, Austen was a prolific writer from adolescence until her death in 1817. Neither Jane nor Cassandra ever married. Their lives as members of the landed gentry consisted of much traveling to visit family and friends. Her observations during her travels of the intricacies of this social class serve as inspirations for her writings. Throughout her literary career, Jane constantly revised her writings. In 1810, Sense and Sensibility was accepted for publication. Like most female writers of her day, none of Austen's works were published under her own name in her lifetime. Austen lived her life in an upper-middle class family during the early 19th century in England. It is the day-to-day life of people in this society that is the primary focus of her work.
The near perfection for which Austen's novels are known today is a result of her extensive rewriting of these works during her life. Only four of her novels were published during her lifetime, and her contemporary society was, for the most part, unaware of her outstanding achievements.
Austen's works combine romantic comedy with social satire and a witty view of her contemporary society.
