Jane Austen
Jane Austen (1775-1817) was a prominent British novelist. She stands as a model of the writer whose apparently sheltered life did nothing to reduce the stature and drama of her fiction. Her first novel (pub. posth.), Northanger Abbey, pokes fun at the Gothic novels of Ann Radcliffe. Austen is most famous, however, for her later works, which took the form of socially conscious comedies of errors. These, especially Emma, are often cited for their perfection of form, while modern critics continue to unearth new perspectives on Austen's keen commentary on the predicament of young, unmarried, upper-class English women in the early 1800s. The order in which she began and completed her novels is different from that of publication. Her novels were fairly well received when they were published, with Sir Walter Scott , in particular, praising her work. Her reputation has only increased since, and she is now considered one of the greatest English novelists. Biography: Life (1775-1817) and Family
  • Childhood and early creative work (Steventon, 1775-). Early adulthood at Steventon (-1801), and Bath (1801-1806). Maturity in Southampton (1806-1809) and Chawton (1809-1817).
The main source of information about Jane Austen's life is family letters, especially those of Jane to her sister Casandra from 1796 onwards, supplemented by family recollections (which were generally not written down, however, until half a century after Jane Austen's death).
Her childhood and early creative work (Steventon, 1775)
Jane Austen was born December 16th, 1775 at Steventon, Hampshire, England (near Basingstoke). She was the seventh child (out of eight) and the second daughter (out of two), of the Rev. George Austen, 1731-1805 (the local rector, or Church of England clergyman), and his wife Cassandra, 1739-1827 ( Pride and Prejudice ) couldn't have given his daughters much to marry on. More than one reader has wondered whether the childhood of the character Catherine Morland in Jane Austen's novel Northanger Abbey might not reflect her own childhood, at least in part Catherine enjoys "rolling down the green slope at the back of the house" and prefers cricket and baseball to girls' play.

In 1783, Jane and her older sister Cassandra went briefly to be taught by a Mrs. Cawley (the sister of one of their uncles), who lived first in Oxford and then moved to Southampton. They were brought home after an infectious disease broke out in Southampton. In 1785-1786 Jane and Cassandra went to the Abbey boarding school in Reading, which apparently bore some resemblance to Mrs. Goddard's casual school in Emma . (Jane was considered almost too young to benefit from the school, but their mother is reported to have said that "if Cassandra's head had been going to be cut off, Jane would have hers cut off too".) This was Jane Austen's only education outside her family. Within their family, the two girls learned drawing, to play the piano, etc. (See "Accomplishments" and Women's Education.)

Jane Austen
Haar eerste gepubliceerde roman was "Sense and Sensibility" (1811).

Jane Austen was born 16 December 1775 at Steventon Parish, Hampshire, England. She was the seventh child and second daughter of the Rev. George Austen and Cassandra Leigh-Austen. Jane was devoted to her older sister, Cassandra-Elizabeth, and eventually wrote enough letters to her to choke a horse. When Cassandra, age 10, was sent away to school in Oxford , Jane begged to be sent along with her even though she was too young. Mr. Austen, however, couldn't really afford their schooling and the girls were back home after less than three years. Apart from this, Jane never lived outside of her family circle again . She ended up very well-educated for a female, though. Her oldest brother James helped her out by organizing reading lists for her, and Jane could lay claim to a good knowledge of history as well as a little Latin, Italian and musical training. It was 1787 when Jane made the decision to devote all her spare time to writing. This early work made three volumes of

Jane Austen, 1775-1817 Jane Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, where her father was a rector. She was the second daughter and seventh child in a family of eight. She was mostly tutored at home, and irregularly at school. Her parents were avid readers and she received a broader education than many women of her time. Her father supported his daughter's writing aspirations and tried to help her get a publisher. Austen first gave the novel its modern character through the treatment of everyday life. Although she was widely read in her lifetime, she published her works anonymously. The most urgent preoccupation of her young, well-bred heroines is courtship, and finally marriage in the world dominated by men. Austen herself never married. Her best-known books include Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Emma (1816). Virginia Woolf called her "the most perfect artist among women." Jane Austen 1775-1817
Urodzi³a siê 16 grudnia 1775 roku, w kochaj±cej rodzinie, w wiosce Steventon. Mia³a radosn± i wra¿liw± osobowo¶æ. Lubi³a swoje ¿ycie, zawsze pogodnie nastawiona do ¶wiata.
Mi³o¶æ do literatury odziedziczy³a po ojcu, a poczucie humoru - po matce. Jej talent ujawni³ siê bardzo wcze¶nie, ju¿ w wieku 15 lat Jane napisa³a zabawn± historyjkê, któr± zilustrowa³a jej starsza siostra, Kasandra. Gdy by³a nastolatk± lubi³a pisaæ weso³e, ironiczne opowiadania, które wieczorami czytywa³a rodzinie. Uwielbia³a chwile spêdzone z kochaj±c± rodzin±. W latach 1785-98 Jane Austen stworzy³a pierwsz± wersjê "Rozwa¿na i romantyczna" ("Sense and Sensibility"). Jej najs³ynniejsz± ksi±¿ka jest niew±tpliwie "Duma i uprzedzenie" ("Pride and prejidice") napisana w latach 1796-97, któr± wydano w 1813 roku. Na podstawie jej ksi±¿ek powsta³o wiele wspania³ych filmów. Warto obejrzeæ m.in. wspania³± ekranizacjê "Rozwa¿nej i Romantycznej" z doskona³ymi rolami m.in. Emmy Thompson i Hugh Granta. Ekranizowano tak¿e "Emmê" i "Dumê i uprzedzenie".

Jane Austen was born in the village of Steventon, Hampshire in 1775, within five years of Wordsworth and Scott. She was the seventh of eight children. Her father, George, had been a Fellow of St. John's College, Oxford and lately Rector of Steventon. Her mother, Cassandra, nee Leigh, came from an ancient family, linked to the Leighs of Stonehill Abbey in Warwickshire. Jane and her sister, also Cassandra, were sent to school in Oxford and Southampton, before attending the Abbey School in Reading , and were encouraged to write from an early age. Jane started writing novels in 1790, at the age of only 14, while she was living in Steventon, although her first novel to be published, Sense and Sensibility , did not appear until 1811.
