A Hyper-Concordance to the Works of Jane Austen One half of the world cannot understand the pleasures of the other. ( Emma ch. 9) It is not time or opportunity that is to determine intimacy; it is disposition alone. Seven years would be insufficient to make some people acquainted with each other, and seven days are more than enough for others. ( Sense and Sensibility vol. 2, ch. 12)

    Jane Austen, 1775-1817
The Romantic Age brought, rather paradoxically, the cool and classically shaped novels of Jane Austen, a major practitioner and still a model for apprentices in the craft. She began writing at an early age. By 15 she was writing plays and sketches for the amusement of her family, and by the time she was 21 she had begun to write novels that are among the finest in English literature. Through her portrayals of ordinary people in everyday life, Jane Austen gave the genre of the novel its modern character and became the world's first great female novelist.
Jane Austen was born the 7th of 8 children to the Reverend George Austen and his wife, Cassandra Leigh, on December 16, 1775, in the parsonage of Steventon, a village in Hampshire, England. She had 6 brothers (James, George, Edward, Henry, Francis, and Charles) and one sister, Cassandra. Her parents were both descended from ancient country families. The Austens were farmers and the Leighs were of a higher social standing, that of landed gentry. The Steventon rectory, repaired and enlarged by Reverend Austen before the family moved in, was a reasonably comfortable, old-fashioned family home, Jane's home for the first 25 years of her life and where her 3 early novels were composed. Although she and her sister briefly attended several different schools, Jane was educated mainly by her father, who taught his own children and several pupils who boarded with the family. As a result, Jane received more education than most women of her time.

    Jane Austen (1775-1817)
    Biographical note
Considered one of the greatest English novelists, Austen's chief gift was to be a close observer of human society and social interaction. While her first novel, the posthumously published Northanger Abbey, pokes fun at the Gothic novels of Ann Radcliffe, Austen is most famous for her later works, which took the form of socially conscious comedies of errors. These, especially Emma, are often cited for their perfection of form, while modern critics continue to unearth new perspectives on Austen's keen commentary on the predicament of young, unmarried, upper-class English women in the early 1800s. «Jane Austen famously stated that 'three or four families in a country village is the thing to work on,' and she remained steadfast in applying this trustworthy formula. The great strength of her novels is the social observations they contain: Austen employed a strong sense of irony in her critique of aristocratic disaffection and the pretensions of the nouveau riche. With a measured sardonic eye she was able to summarise social mores and the restraints suffered by women in Regency England.» Portal Universia S.A.

    CHAPTER I
The letter was not unproductive. It re-established peace and kindness. Sir Thomas sent friendly advice and professions, Lady Bertram dispatched money and baby-linen, and Mrs. Norris wrote the letters. Such were its immediate effects, and within a twelvemonth a more important advantage to Mrs. Price resulted from it. Mrs. Norris was often observing to the others that she could not get her poor sister and her family out of her head, and that, much as they had all done for her, she seemed to be wanting to do more; and at length she could not but own it to be her wish that poor Mrs. Price should be relieved from the charge and expense of one child entirely out of her great number. What if they were among them to undertake the care of her eldest daughter, a girl now nine years old, of an age to require more attention than her poor mother could possibly give? The trouble and expense of it to them would be nothing, compared with the benevolence of the action. Lady Bertram agreed with her instantly. I think we cannot do better, said she; let us send for the child.

    CHAPTER 1
By a former marriage, Mr. Henry Dashwood had one son: by his present lady, three daughters. The son, a steady respectable young man, was amply provided for by the fortune of his mother, which had been large, and half of which devolved on him on his coming of age. By his own marriage, likewise, which happened soon afterwards, he added to his wealth. To him therefore the succession to the Norland estate was not so really important as to his sisters; for their fortune, independent of what might arise to them from their father's inheriting that property, could be but small. Their mother had nothing, and their father only seven thousand pounds in his own disposal; for the remaining moiety of his first wife's fortune was also secured to her child, and he had only a life-interest in it.

Many consider this rich social commentary to be Jane Austen's finest novel. It is certainly among her more famous ones. Austen sets her entertaining study of manners and misconceptions against the backdrop of a class-conscious society in 18th-century England. Spirited, intelligent Elizabeth Bennet is alternately enchanted and affronted by Mr. Darcy. She is quick to suspend her usual, more rational judgment when it comes to him. She also is quick to believe the worst gossip about this haughty, opinionated man, who soon manages to alienate Elizabeth and her family. But is the condescending air that Mr. Darcy wars an indication of his real character? Or has Elizabeth's pride gotten in the way of her chance for true romance?
