Letters of St. Augustine

Saint Augustine was one of the foremost philosopher-theologians of early Christianity and the leading figure in the church of North Africa. He had a profound influence on the subsequent development of Western thought and culture, and shaped the themes and defined the problems that have characterized the Western tradition of Christian theology. His two most celebrated writings are his semiautobiographical Confessions and City of God , a Christian vision of history.
Augustine was born at Thagaste in Numidia, which is part of present day Algeria. His father, Patricius (died about 371), was a pagan (later converted to Christianity), but his mother, Monica, was a devout Christian who labored untiringly for her son's conversion and who was canonized by the Roman Catholic church. As a child he was schooled in Latin literature and later went to Carthage to study rhetoric, where he became a teacher. By the age of twenty he turned away from his Christian upbringing. He was repelled by its codes of behavior, but he never completely renounced it.
At Cathage he became enthusiastic about philosophy after reading Cicero's Hortensius . He considered becoming a Christian, but experimented with several philosophical systems before finally entering the church. For nine years, from 373 until 382, he adhered to Manichaeism, a Persian dualistic philosophy then widely current in the Western Roman Empire. With its fundamental principle of conflict between good and evil and its claim of a rational interpretation of Scripture, Manichaeism at first seemed to Augustine to correspond to experience and to furnish the most plausible hypothesis upon which to construct a philosophical and ethical system. Moreover, its moral code was not unpleasantly strict; Augustine later recorded in his

Life
Saint Augustine was raised in Roman north Africa, educated in Carthage and employed as a professor of rhetoric in Milan by 383. He followed the Manichaean religion in his student days, and was converted to Christianity by the preaching and example of Ambrose of Milan. He was baptized at Easter in 387, and returned to north Africa and created an monastic foundation at Tagaste for himself and a group of friends. In 391 he was ordained a priest in Hippo. He became a famous preacher (more than 350 preserved sermons are believed to be authentic), and noted for combatting the Manichaean heresy. He also advocated the use of force against the Donatists , asking "Why . . . should not the Church use force in compelling her lost sons to return, if the lost sons compelled others to their destruction?" ( The Correction of the Donatists In 396 he was made coadjutor bishop of Hippo (assistant with the right of succession on the death of the current bishop), and remained as bishop in Hippo until his death in 430. He left his monastery, but continued to lead a monastic life in the episcopal residence. He left a Rule (

Augustine of Hippo (354-430) envisioned a form of religious community life in which the members would "live in harmony, being united in mind and heart on the way God." He wrote a Rule outlining the basic principles of this sort of life. Today Augustinians and many other religious orders and congregations still use this Rule as their guide. A Bishop in Hippo (near modern-day Annaba, Algeria), Augustine was an influential leader in the African Church. As Christians were growing in their knowledge of God and Christ, Augustine helped to shape Christian theological teachings, particularly those about the role of Divine Grace and the nature of the Holy Trinity. In the process, he combatted many theological errors. The son of Monica, a holy Christian, and Patricius, a pagan, Augustine was born in 354 in Tagaste (now known as Souk Ahras, Algeria). He was educated in the best secular schools of his day. As a young man, he led a distinctly non-Christian and immoral life. He lived with a young woman without the benefit of marriage. Together they had a son, Adeodatus. The young Augustine was continually searching with a restless heart for meaning in life. Each time that he would be attracted to a particular philosophy or group, he would become disillusioned the more familiar he became with its thought.

This is one of the few books written for grown-ups, and is still relevant today, particularly Augustine's thoughts on the nature of time. And his humility is a lesson in itself. Out Of 5 Tolle Lege! I recently reread "The Confessions of St. Augustine" after many years and am glad that I did. This book, which is oftencalled the first autobiography, is really not an autobiography in the sense that we use the term. It is Augustine's Confession to God, from which we glean many details about Augustine's life. In this we learn of Augustine's family, his early life, his search for truth and, throughout the book, his teachings on theology. Here we see him move to the gradually larger world, from Tagaste, to Carthage, to Rome, to Milan, where he finally finds Truth. He is then ready to return to his native Africa, his preparation completed for the work which would make him one of the greatest, Christian theologians of all time.

The Baptism of Saint Augustine Folio 37v This painting, of medium size, occupies an unusual place in the middle of the Te Deum, which it illustrates. Men of the Middle Ages saw a close relationship hetween the baptism of Saint Augustine and the origins of this magnificent rich song whose verses in praise of God alternate like a noble dialogue.
According to Jacopo da Voragine's The Golden Legend, on Easter day Augustine received baptism with his son, Adeodatus, born to him while he was still a pagan philosopher, and his friend Alypius, converted like Augustine by the words of Saint Ambrose.
After public confession and baptism Saint Ambrose cried "Te Deum Laudamus, " to which Augustine replied "Te Dominum confitemur"; their alternate words of praise continued on to make up the whole hymn.
The Limbourgs represented the scene in a hexagonal baptistery with red vaults. Immersed to his waist in the baptismal font, Augustine wears a miter that symbolizes his future office of bishop of Hippo in Africa.
Dressed in priestly vestments and wearing the miter of the archhishop of Milan, Saint Ambrose pours the haptismal water over Augustine's head. Various figures complete the scene, including one wearing a pointed turban, one contemplating the baptism, and others commenting on it.

The greatest of the Latin Christian Fathers and African theologians and one of the outstanding thinkers of all time. Augustine was of Berber descent and almost certainly Black. His mother, Monica, was a Christian whose virtues he praised. But at Carthage he was drawn into sexual excesses: later, while studying rhetoric and philosophy, he came under the influence of Manichaism followed by Neoplatonism. In the spring of 387, after many sessions with Ambrose, Bishop of Milan, and the study of the Bible, Augustine was baptized. The events of Augustine's life are recorded in his Confessions which is a spiritual classic and the first real work of Christian autobiography. Augustine's Christinaity remained strongly ascetic and his writings display a remarkably African ethos. In 396 he was consecrated Bishop of Hippo and remained a pastor until his death. For more than thirty years Augustine was the leading the theologian in African Christianity. In 410 the Goths sacked Rome and the pagans blamed the Christians whose God they said caused the disaster. Augustine put the capstone on his theological activity by defending the Christians against this charge in his great work The City of God Augustine's theology helped bring about the Protestant Reformation and deeply influenced early Protestant theologians such as Martin Luther and John Calvin who were strongly Augustinian in their outlook.

Augustine's Confessions is arguably the first, and unequivocally the most influential, religious autobiography in the Christian tradition. Augustine (who was a hard-core hedonist before his sudden conversion) writes about faith with the reckless abandon of a lover; his descriptions of friendship are so beautiful they'll bring tears to your eyes; and his tributes to his mother, Monica, cast eternally fresh light on the unofficial authority of women in the early Church. Michael Joseph Gross

From Booklist

There is certainly no shortage of English translations of Augustine's Confessions ; but given its undeniable place as a classic of Christian literature, there is perhaps room for one more. Boulding's translation brings Augustine's extended prayer to life with a sensitivity to his passion and poetry that should make the text more accessible to contemporary English readers. Boulding includes an introduction and a chronology that place Augustine in context and guide readers through the sometimes perplexing structure of the book. There is no doubt that Augustine continues to reach contemporary readers across the 16 centuries that separate them from his writing and its context. This new translation should contribute to the clarity with which that reach is extended.
