THE NEW YORK PUBLIC LIBRARY AND ITS SLAVIC AND BALTIC DIVISION The idea of creating the New York Public Library developed in 1895, when the library of John Jacob Astor (1763-1848), which included a great number of rare books, was unified with the library of James Lenox (1800-1880). A donation of 15,000 volumes from the library of Samuel Jones Tilden (1814-1886), together with $2,000, 000 for the new library, made the foundation possible. In 1901, eleven public libraries from all over the city joined The New York Public Library, Astor, Lenox and Tilden Foundation. The first site of the Library (Lower Manhattan) soon turned out to be too small and necessitated construction of new home for the Library (completed 1911). The building, which is a national landmark, was located at the corner of 5th Avenue and 42nd Street. The main reading room of the Library can accommodate 800 people. The New York Public Library is a private institution which serves readers on a non-paying basis. It is responsible for operating of 4 research centers (with 39 million items, including 12 million books) and 82 branch libraries (10,5 million items, including 5,9 million books) and is governed by a 43-member Board of Trustees. The Research Libraries depend heavily on private contributions. The Branch Libraries are primarily supported by the City and State of New York. The acquisition of materials is done in a variety of ways. The library mostly buys (sometimes also exchanges) books. The growth of the collection is also a direct result of valuable gifts.

Getting wind of it, Dr. Raymond Stantz immediately snatched up his partner, Dr. Peter Venkman, from their University lab and met up with Dr. Egon Spengler at the library to investigate. They soon learned, however, that they bit off more than they could chew as the old lady ghost they were looking for turned into a roaring monster. The experience wasn’t a complete waste, fortunately, as braniac Egon received readings on one of his devices that told him it would be possible to trap and hold ghosts. Astor, John Jacob u r] Pronunciation Key Astor, John Jacob , American merchant, b. Walldorf, near Heidelberg, Germany. At the age of 16 he went to England, and five years later, in 1784, he arrived in Baltimore, penniless. He later went to New York City, where in a few years he entered into business with a small shop for trade in musical instruments and furs. Shrewdness, driving ambition, and stolid concentration brought him to a commanding position in the burgeoning economy of the United States. He became a leader of the China trade and was an astute investor in lands, principally in and around New York City, but he is perhaps best remembered as a fur trader. He chartered the American Fur Company Astoria , Oreg.) and the South West Company (operating around the Great Lakes). His firm exercised a virtual monopoly of the trade in U.S. territories in the 1820s and still did when he retired from it in 1834. The wealthiest man in the United States at his death, he left a fortune that has continued to make the family name prominent. Part of his money went to found the Astor Library (see New York Public Library ). His Astor House was a forerunner of family hotel properties that much later included the Astor Hotel and the Waldorf-Astoria.

American Fur Company, U.S. History
Related Category: U.S. History American Fur Company, chartered by John Jacob Astor Astoria , Oreg., to control the Columbia River valley fur trade, was made under a subsidiary, the Pacific Fur Company. His early operations around the Great Lakes were under another subsidiary, the South West Company, in which Canadian merchants had a part. The War of 1812 destroyed both companies. In 1817, after an act of Congress excluded foreign traders from U.S. territory, the American Fur Company commanded the trade in the Lakes region. An alliance made in 1821 with the Chouteau interests of St. Louis gave the company a monopoly of the trade in the Missouri River region and later in the Rocky Mts. (see mountain men ). The company was one of the first great American trusts. It maintained its monopoly by the customary early practice of buying out or crushing any small company that threatened opposition. When Astor withdrew in 1834, the company split and the name became the property of the former northern branch under Ramsey Crooks, but popular usage still applied it to succeeding companies. The American Fur Company strongly influenced the history of the frontier, not only by preparing the way for permanent settlement but by opening Great Lakes commercial fishing, steamboat transportation, and trade in lead.

UNTERSCHRIFTEN
