The Germans in America: Chronology
Several Germans were among the settlers at Jamestown.
Peter Minuit, a German, came to New Amsterdam to serve as the governor of the Dutch colony, New Netherlands. Later he governed the Swedish colony in Delaware.
Thirteen families of German Mennonites seeking religious freedom arrived in Pennsylvania; led by Franz Pastorius, they purchased 43,000 acres of land and founded Germantown, six miles north of Philadelphia.
The settling of the British colonies by small German-speaking religious groups continued. The groups included Swiss Mennonites, Baptist Dunkers, Schwenkfelders, Moravians, Amish , and Waldensians; most German immigrants belonged to the main Lutheran and Reformed churches. The central colonies received the greatest part of this immigration, especially Pennsylvania . As many as half of these immigrants came as redemptioners, that is, they agreed to work in America for four to seven years in exchange for free passage across the Atlantic. German settlers designed and built the Conestoga wagon , which was used in the opening of the American Frontier.

Building the Library

Creating the Neighborhood Libraries

The history of The New York Public Library begins more than 100 years ago. As the 19th century drew to a close, New York, the greatest city in America, still had no real public library. But thanks to a handful of visionaries and millions upon millions of users, The New York Public Library today is internationally recognized as one of the greatest institutions of its kind. The Library's importance is a function not only of its sheer size and scope, but also of its unique character. It is the only library that features both world-acclaimed research centers and a large network of neighborhood branch libraries, all of which may be used by the public, free of charge. The Library is also distinguished by its long-standing tradition of serving the local community, as well as the international world of learning. Its branch system is one of the largest in the world. Computer technology makes its catalogs of holdings accessible to users worldwide. The Library's collections themselves reflect the profoundly democratic and all-encompassing nature of the institution. Numbering into the tens of millions, its holdings range from the most venerable monuments of human culture such as the Gutenberg Bible and Jefferson's manuscript copy of the Declaration of Independence to materials that document the everyday lives of otherwise anonymous people.

Working as a street peddler, he raised enough capital to open the first music store in New York, switching to fur trading in 1786. After a childhood friend was able to obtain a trading license for him for all of the ports of the East India Company, the American Fur Company grew to be one of the most powerful monopolies of its time, enabling Astor to earn his first million dollars by 1810. Astor built a series of splendid hotels, became a shipping Magnate and real estate investor. After his death on March 29, 1848, the man who had become a millionaire 25 times over left $400,000 for a library to be built in his name. This library eventually became what is now the world famous New York Public Library.
